Monthly Painting Challenge - February 2015

#1 Post by Jimmy »

Howdy everyone!

Welcome to the February 2015 painting challenge.

If you are new to the sunken shores of Ulthuan and just joining us the idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or build/convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:

- If you finish your pledge, and you would like to really impress the rest of the forum, you can then go on to add a Bonus pledge.

- Pledges and be models from any range/system not restricted to Warhammer, this is just about raising motivation and getting models done pure and simply.

- Comment on other people's work!

Please post the progression of your work (pictures if at all possible). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the painting and modelling forum or plog if you have one.

FAQ

Q: So I can Only do High Elves or GW Minis, for my pledge?

A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like from any gaming system.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!

A: well.. simply update your post.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?

A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?

A: Absolutely... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?

A. For sure! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

I've been laying low in terms of models the last few months due to working away from home and being overseas so I'm hoping February will give me a solid run at painting some models.

Going to have a crack at:

Dark Angel Captain
Space Marine Tactical Squad
Orc Warboss
Orc BSB
Anything else shiny that I can find.
Nec Sorte Nec Fato - Neither By Chance Nor Fate

Ok, it's my first monthly challenge so i will keep a low target. Here is my pledge:
-Finish to paint my mounted prince
-Convert (and maybe paint) a Dark elf dreadlord into my custom Alith Anar (his current model is just creepy)

Going for a massive one here. I'll never make it, but I never do.

Lion Chariot and Korhil
11 mordheim skaven and a rat orge
Aneur
A Reaper stand in for a Kislev ranger (because the GW one was not a good model)

If I get it half done and progress on the rest I'll be happy.

Terrain:
Finish the canal and bridges
Make some more buildings.

I'll keep working on my Tomb Kings. Planning to paint:
10 horsemen (base colours and drubrush done, one is 90% complete)
24 warriors (undercoated, 3 are finished)
18 archers (undercoated)
3 chariots (one machine is done, its crew and the other 2 chariots are only undercoated)
warsphinx (beast is 80% finished, crew is undercoated)

The colour scheme is pretty simple, so I'm hoping on getting a lot of it done.
cheers, Lee

Hmm, I suppose I should try and finish my pledge from last month.

There's no rule against pledging the same thing twice, right?

I actually did the kisliv ranger today myself. Doubt I'll have to expand anything though.

I've nearly finished Jan's pledge of some PG. (Pledged 5, nearly finished 7)

I have a FoW game middle of the month so I plan on finishing some bits ready for that, then back to the elves. I'll keep mine simple this month, a mage on foot. If time permits I'll then get started on some more PG...

My first challenge turned 10 sisters of Avelorn into a Phoenix so this month I will try to stay on track.

Pledge: Lion Chariot

And if time permits, 10 sisters of Avelorn.

The last 10 TG in my unit of 30, and then something else.

Not sure what that something else will be. Probably a few lowly skinks.

Really nice gruccione. Are you planning on adding the cape at all or sticking with the dots?

Thank you, but I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean when you say "adding the cape at all or sticking with the dots" (sometimes english translation to italian is a bit tricky)

Well, I think he dropped a word (something I'm sure I'm guilty of far more than I notice, in addition to using all kinds of idioms- some of which I make up.)

I think he probably meant to say something more along the lines of:

re you planning on adding TO the cape at all or sticking with the dots?

Time for my first pledge!

I have rather limited hobby time due to work and what not, so I'm gonna aim to finish the front rank of my first spear-elf unit. Anything on top of that is a bonus!

Anur, Sword of Twlight and 3 skaven with slings are done now as well.

That leaves 6 skaven hero types, Visket, and a Rat Orge to do. And the lion Chariot.

I'll probably also add a mage to use as an ice mage, but that's just for something to break up the skaven a bit. Haven't really gotten into the swing of painting them.

That's really nice, really like the triangular dot pattern, breaks up that flat colour nicely!

@shannar: well now it makes sense. I think I'll leave the cape like that, i really like how it looks
@razzy: thank you! But to be honest the idea come from the 6th codex, that pattern was on an archer champion. I simply love that codex, so inspirating and very well done in the modelling section (a memory from the times when there still was much more passion for the hobby, and a bit less for marketing) :')

I was so close to finish my january pledge but didn't quite get there. I pledge to finish a prince and archmage rider for my stardragon.
When that is done it's time to work on Glottkin for my local game store. I'll see what time I have available before I pledge anything specifik for them :D

2 Nightrunners done, and the ice mage halfway. If I finish the rest of the skaven, along with the lions for the chariot I'll call it a very good month indeed.

Everyone else's stuff is looking great so far, too! :)

I finished the first rider a few days ago and just realised I forgot to post him here :)
I kind of lost interest in the last guy a bit and decided to do a little side project. My sister requested I paint a model for her and chose the Empire Witch hunter (damn empire guys are easy to paint compared to high elves...). He is going to be the first ever model I do on a scenic display base and I have all sorts of ideas for it - most of them including some sort of water effect so that will be fun :)

Anyways. Pictures of my Prince on Star Dragon:

Maybe a halfling cook as the side distraction now.
