The Phoenixes Painted - Pontiac and Snowflake (IOB Griffon)!

I'm pretty proud of these guys. They were both made from the same kit.

Thanks!

The firebird took just under 2 hours to paint. Snowflake took longer because of drying time on the wash.

I have a much easier time painting the big monsters as opposed to little guys.

The firebird was really pretty simple. I just slathered a base coat of brown all over him. Then applied red gore over it to make him read. The flame effect was a matter of dry brushing orange over the red gore base, and then some yellow over that, and then a bit of white here and there. I then re drybrushed the red gore at the edges of the wings to bring the red back out. Slap some yellow on the beak and feat, pick out the little flames with some orange, and all done.

Snowflake was based with white spray paint. I then painted the feathered sections black and dry brushed some white on it to pick up the details. The other part I dry brushed with some black to pick out the details. I painted one section of feathers on both wings gray and dry brushed it with some black. After that I washed the whole thing in blue. After it dried i picked out the snow flakes and painted the beak, etc. Then I just dry brushed it with white to bring out more of the detail.

Hey atlantic!

I really like that conversion you did with the griffon, may i ask how you did it? or more over, what was needed in terms of major construction?

Thanks!

These are the steps I took to make the Phoenix.

1. I build the firebird from the kit according to the instructions.

2. The kit came with an icy tail, icy wing bits, 2 other heads, and an icy feather mane.

3. I took the IOB Griffon on the sprue and modified the rider to fit on a horse.

Here is a picture of him!

4. I trimmed the Griffon Wings to broadly fit the icy wing bits. I used Greenstuff to fill gaps and sculpted feathers into it.

5. I took the griffon body and removed the eagle head, eagle feet, lion feet, and lion tail.

6. I took the lion legs and inserted them into the hollow cavity of the griffon body to elongate the torso and give me a place to mount the tail feathers. Liberal amounts of Green stuff were used in this process.

7. I took the eagle head and put it into the green stuff from step 6. I used the flatish surface this created to attach the eagle feet from the griffon. More liberal use of green stuff.

8. I mounted the griffon wings to the torso.

9. I used green stuff to sculpt a neck out from where the wings were mounted to attach the mane and head.

10. I had to wait for the green stuff from step 9 to harden overnight. I then built it up further with more green stuff and sculpted feathers into it.

11. I attached the mane and head.

12. I took an old paint brush, cut it, and drilled a hole into the chest cavity of snowflake to hold it.

13. I didn't have any spare chariot bases so I made my base out of two of the IOB Griffon bases. I glued some fallen elven masonry bits to help hold them together. Filled gaps with Green stuff and them mounted my paintbrush flight stand to the base.

I'm pretty happy with the results. I think I got the body shaped pretty good.
