The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
I finally got around to taking some pictures and posting them. I only started playing just six months after 8th edition released. I got a Island of Blood set for my birthday in December of 2010. I have never painted anything before, except a wall or two. I am not very imaginative with paint schemes so I stayed close to the GW site color schemes.
Which was helpful as the GW website had all these great tutorials on how to paint High Elves (example: gems, lion cloaks, bronze armor) then they decided to remove all those great tutorials because the paints names changed(*facepalm*).So without those tutorials I painted off the box covers doing as best as I could.
I have had a real blast painting and I am amazed that my army has grown so large. I still have some things on the painting table but this is mostly what is table ready. I apologize for the movement trays as none of them are done. and still need to base my seaguard. Also i am not very good at photographing.
Anyways enjoy
I tried to theme the army from Saphery with conscripts from outlying kingdoms Lothern, Chrace, and of course Caledor
The fulcrum I made from a Lamp I found at a thrift store. I use it as an Elven Fulcrum for Storm of Magic games.
Russurion the first Dragon lord of Saphery.
My Dragon Mage: He has managed to die in every battle except one. Because of that I have a son/grandson/great grandson, and etc. to take up their Father's mantle. The current heir is Orlanis the 11th.
What is a Sapherian host without plenty of Swordmasters. I need to finish/highlight their banners.
Spearmen of Saphery.
My Archers of Hoeth
Lothern Seaguard
Shadow Warriors but I normally just field them as an archer conscript from Nagarythe.
Horde of white lions? Yes, please. These guys almost always shine.
Lion chariots, I wish they cost less, but fun to smash units with them.
My combat parrots
Phoenix Guard
Which one you think is the Beast mage?
I had fun kit bashing this guy from bits of other units.
Fire/Metal mage
A few more mages
Heroes and Mages of Saphery
Thanks for looking.

Looks great, but now it's too small no detail can be made out, try taking multiple photos ^_^

It was simple sprue clippers to cut the legs, then green stuff, over the legs and then use the sprue clippers to nip at the green stuff. Not perfect but it's not too bad looking.Arch Mage wrote:How did you get the griffons rider off?

Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
Thanks for the kind comments. I am a poor photographer but here are some better pictures of my lion chariots.
Here are a few pictures of my Dragon Princes of Caledor
I magnetized the command groups so I could exchange Banners with lance,
Exchange the horn with a shield
I can exchange the sword for a lance.
I figured this way I could choose to run command or any options of command and it is wysiwyg.

Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
I am currently working on a few projects. One is some unit fillers. Pictured below are two for my White lions and one for spears/LSG or archer horde. Obviously a work in progress.
I am also currently painting some Silverhelms. They have been on the back burner for a while. Even though I think their background is neat, they need to be core or at least able to take banners/magic items. I have manged to paint their horses just need to do some highlights. The riders are only in base coat stages. I hope the Asur receive monstrous cavalry in the form of Silverhelms on Unicorns! Anyways, the progress thus far.

I love the Dragon Prince banner, and the unit fillers look good. A bit of a Chracian theme for a Saphery army though....

Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
Well as I said two of them are unit fillers for the white lions. The third one does have the lion head and is intended for Spears/Archers/LSG but I suppose I can say the Sapherian Army is supporting the Kingdom of Chrace in its time of need. That must explain why I roll a lot of forests on the random terrain chart during my games. I suppose I need to make a more Sapherian themed unit fillers. I just was kit-bashing leftover bits to make them.

Those unit fillers for the white lions are ace, great idea and fantastic execution!
The whole army is looking really nice, though I would really like to see some close up shots of some of the units? I just really need to feel inferior

Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
Unit fillers for my White Lions pretty close to done. Not entirely happy with the vines. I wanted vines to look "fey" hence I tried to use bold highlights with the green.
Here's the filler my core troops.
I think this is finished; added a shield to the unit filler/armory cache.
Going to try and make a Sapherian themed unit filler(s) for the core troops. Stay tuned.

The vines looks great, the green is tops but I think if you did some highlighting in purple it could look 'fey'

Ok so my Saphery themed unit filler. All of my unit fillers; I envisioned a weapons cache. The lions unit fillers have an axe, the other unit filler have an assortment of weapons next to a broken, pseudo repaired lion pillar. This is very much a work in progress. I am still playing around with ideas, this is what I have so far, any ideas input always appreciated.
Used left over bits from a Tiranoc chariot to make the railings.
Added some shields and swords.
Sand, might add a stone or two.

I am sorry haven't posted in a while been very busy at work. The unit fillers are still a work in progress. As I have mentioned before, only been painting for less than two years. I received two boxes of island of Blood for x-mas in 2010. So naturally my first foray into painting were these awesome Seaguard. I thought I had done fairly well at my first attempt to paint, but one thing I noticed was hoe flat they were. hardly any highlights, just base coats and washes. So I decided to repaint them, specifically the shields, highlight a few things. What I discovered is how much better my painting has become, here some examples:
I still have to finish the gems, and actually base them with sand or something. I laugh at my old painting techniques as my idea of basing was slap some brown paint on them. My gem work, the gems were dark red that's it, no gloss varnish no highlights. I now know to use several colors dark red, bright red, orange, white to make the gems more realistic, plus some gloss varnish. Just amazing to see the progress over less than two year lapse. I need to take a miniature painting workshop.
Making progress still have to base them I scraped some grass flock off about 15 of them not sure how I want to base them was thinking of trying the Citadel Texture: Stirland Mud to make it look like they are storming the beach or whatever. If anyone has used it I would love a review of Citadel Texture: Stirland Mud. Still need to do the white dot on gems and 'ard coat them.
Here's the progress picture of my Seaguard

Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
Okay, whilst I take a break form painting Seaguard, I started working on terrain. I find it to be a useful diversion from the monotony of painting rank and file models as well as rewarding having some decent terrain for my home games. Ok so I am need of almost all terrain many times at the house I use Tupperware for hills construction paper for roads or rivers. I think we have all done that. Well I thought it time to fashion some proper terrain.
So I came across these moonscape craters, and thought I could make a swamp or khemirian quick sand, a charnel pit. So I did, I still need to base them. I have never made terrain before, except the clever use of a plastic box or construction paper river/lake.
I started by priming black, and dry brushing graveyard earth.
Then I washed it with Badab Black, waited to dry then washed with the wash the replaced Gryphonne Sepia (maybe serim sepia?) I got a hold of some VC bits and reaper bone pack and put the bits together and arranged them in the pit. I was trying to figure out how many bodies/parts to assemble to make it appear full.
Now I had to paint bits here a few photos of the bits painting
These skelly arms/ skulls I literally just base coated then dipped in sepia wash
I did a red wash and added some various red splatter marks around the charnel pit. Then I played around with the arrangement the pieces to get an idea of a layout. My arrangement something like this;
I will eventually put down some pva glue and then arrange them pertinently but am waiting on this miniature to arrive in the mail to fill my gap. I also plan on throwing some brown powdered pigment on them to make them look dirtier, also a few washes of red/brown/purple. Will post when I get the rest done.
Also while waiting for said miniature above I made some Khemirian quicksand.
Add sand.
Paint sand graveyard earth and highlight khemiri khaki, highlight bone.
Next was the swamp.
Painted the same way as above. The swamp water is resin mixed with dark green paint and then I swirled some black paint into the resin just before the pour to make the swamp look scummy
The Finished Swamp
Well I decided to base them after much thought. The craters were curling slightly so I based them and that will help keep them flat, I hope.
The Charnel Pit WIP
The finished Charnel Pit
Still working on the Khemirian Quick sand

Very nice, I was just saying the other day that I never see enough terrain being made. Yours looks great, and simple step by step is always helpful.

Thanks Calyrn, I was wondering where did you get that angel-statue that is in the middle your second photo of your painting blog?Calyrn wrote:Very nice, I was just saying the other day that I never see enough terrain being made. Yours looks great, and simple step by step is always helpful.

Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
Thank you for the pictures. Those are some great pieces and they will certainly help create a great battlefield. For my personal taste I would have made the swamp a bit less bright green (although I suspect this is in part due to the flash) and added a bit more plant life to the base. But as I said, that's personal preference.
If you do want to base them I would go for something like hardboard at 2-3mm thick. It's lightweight and durable enough. If you want to get it realy cheap, go to a hardware store where they sell the wood you want and where they cut it to size for you. Pretty common here in the netherlands at least in the bigger hardware stores. Ask the guy cutting the wood if you can have some of the leftover cut-offs. Often they give them away to you for free (which happened to me) or cheaply. After all, they already sold the piece to someone anyway.
As for thickness, I would go for as thin as you can get. Your terrain shouldn't get too much damage (unless you do realy strange things with it). The base is only realy there to add some rigidity to the structure. 2mm is enough to achieve this.
As for using coffee or tea. No idea. Never used it. I've read of some people doing this without any trouble. You should be fine as long as you keep moisture away (which you should do anyway). However, the question again is probably why you want to use it. What do you want to achieve? For dead or burnt grass I would simply get some dead grass flock from a miniature hobby shop (model train shops a great). It shouldn't be expensive at all (as in €1-2 for a bag) unless you buy from GW. Of course, I don't know your budget or shopping possibilities, so perhaps this is not an option for you. In that case, tea should probably work. As would normal saw dust.

Is there a specific reason to base these? They look solid enough to me, so I would personally just place them on the table as they are now.Russell the Muscle wrote: Ok some questions I have to all you terrain pros. Firstly what do I base these on? MDF? Hardboard? Which thickness should I use? What adhesive to do you recommend to attach these pieces to the board? Also I was considering using coffee and tea grounds mixed with some flock elements on the bases. Can anyone recommend doing so? Do the coffee and tea grinds degrade over time?

I definitely think the flash is making the swamp look a bit more brighter than it truly is. I like your idea of adding plant life to the swamp will work on that, was going to wait until I based them onto some board; see below.rdghuizing wrote:Thank you for the pictures. That is a fine question, honestly I don't know. Maybe I just need to add some sand, rocks and vegetation around the boarders of the pieces without bothering to mount them onto a board.rdghuizing wrote:Is there a specific reason to base these? I have never used coffee or tea, but the pieces I saw the results looked very natural. I only have experience with the modeling sand, and flocks, so I will probably just stick with my GW type basing materials since its what I know.rdghuizing wrote: As for using coffee or tea. No idea. Re: The Shining Host of Saphery Plog
Okay, I have edited my plog, be sure to check out my updates on terrain and Seaguard.
I am about finished with my Wyrding well. Any suggestions to improve it would be appreciated.
Okay working on magic circle
After doing some painting on the magic circle, it occurred to me this piece if painted correctly could serve also as an anvil of Vaul. So with the piece now having a duel purpose this, I set out to make the generic magic circle more high elvish.
I put some resin mixed with blue paint into the center, also added a few High Elves bits around the stone work. I believe High magic symbol is the crescent moon if not well it still looks neat. Once the resin dries ill be able to paint more.
I envision the crevices to have bright-blue magical power surging in the cracks. I haven't painted those in as of yet but hope my vision and result match.
Finally painted up my Saphery Spear Champion. The pictures are over exposed but here is what I took tonight. I will take better ones in the morning to share.
