This is a great army. So where exactly are those drakes from? The small ones.

I'm working on that with my girlfriend (as a project), unfortunately we only see each other once a week or so, so we don't have much time to work on it. Which is regrettable. But my next plan after the Exorcist parts is to start making some terrain in CAD and printing it off. It should be a bit easier.whatawittyname wrote:I'm surprised I hadn't seen this blog already. The drakes are exactly what I was originally going to do myself as Eagles and yours have turned out beautifully. It's such a simple conversion but it works perfectly with a Caledor themed force.
The tower will be very interesting to see more of too.

Re: Asarion's HE Build, Convert, Paint Log.
Well, my computer was down for a week, blown PSU and it burnt out the controlling hardware for my SSD. So that was... fun. No pictures today, but things (I think they call them words).
Anyway, gotten some hobby done at least. But mainly in the maintenance areas. I've been stripping back models. In past pictures, you can see the old metal shadow warriors. They were chipped and didn't match my new paint scheme, so they've been stripped back with Methylated Spirits.
A while back a big pile of about 8 DP's arrived in the mail, I stripped THOSE back with Acetone. And last year I stripped with Simple Green. So time for a quick review.
My thoughts? If you're only doing metal. Acetone, without a doubt is the better substance. Problem is, it apparently eats through plastic miniatures and I wasn't brave enough to test that theory. It brings metal right back up to scratch.
Simple Green. It works, but on the unit I used it on (a WL Chariot won in the local GW giffle) stubbornly refused to take off the undercoat and some basecoat layers. No matter how long I soaked or scrubbed.
Methylated Spirits. It works, not as nicely as acetone, but it gets the job done with an overnight soaking. Had to double dip a couple of the miniatures once I'd taken off the upper layers of paint, otherwise, with a bit of scrubbing they started to come clean. It wasn't 100%, nowhere near as easy as Acetone was, but apparently it works on plastic (and didn't eat the bases they were on). But it stinks. Oh heavens does it reek.
My thoughts? Honestly, all metal miniatures, Acetone, all the way, no questions asked. Plastic, Methylated spirits. It's really as simple as that. There might be other products out there (I've heard suggestions like brake oil etc) but these ones work and are relatively safe.
Now, I'm FINALLY working on the command group for my Archers. This unit was started way back at the start of the year, but they're starting to come together. Only the bases on the last batch I did (of 6) which I'm waiting for my mate to come over for, he mainly plays with either unpainted or colours slapped on, so I'm teaching him the basics of making a neat, clean army. Nothing that's going to win any competitions, but enough that he can have a decent tabletop army. It helps that he plays Eldar and I quite like the Eldar aesthetic.
And my girlfriend bought herself a Chimera, while we're going to base and colour so can be used in either of our armies in things like Storm of Magic. Fortunately, that's something that can handle a crazy colour scheme and look good at it.
As for list building. I still don't know, I'm bouncing around and what is probably the sign of a very well balanced book internally, I keep wanting MORE for my army. Like Seredain, I want to keep putting more bodies down on the ground, but then I want toys like the new Phoenixes, or the Sisters, or finally using my Shadow Warriors (who I'm going to be painting for funsies at the very least).
I'm not buying the Phoenix model still, I'm going with the fill in of a Frost Dragon, which will be my old metal Imrik Dragon on a base, on a base to proxy the same size as the phoenix, so I'm not modelling for advantage.

Re: Asarion's HE B/C/Paint Log. [Paintstripper review 28/7/13]
So, apart from the final banner and basing the last batch + command group, I have FINALLY finished my archer unit. (Only took 6+ months)
Unfortunately, there were a couple of pooled bits at the bottom that I wasn't able to catch in time. Fortunately, at tabletop distance, it's hard to see, if at all. A) Anyone have a technique that they'd like to share to fix it?
And B) I'm planning on putting a gold rune emblazoned on the front, any tips and hints on how to do that?
Finally C) I also intend on trying out OSL on the very top of the banner pole. Any good tutorials out there beyond what comes up at the top of Google?
Here's where it is at, at the moment. (Keep in mind it's after dark and my only camera is my phone, so quality isn't the greatest.
Once the rune is on, I'm going to do some highlighting around the top of the banner.

Great blog ... some excellent ideas. I especially like the drakes. I have some extra cold ones so I could definitely give this a try.

Nice dragons! And nice color scheme for the archers! Well done! are you going for a dragon freehand on the banner?

Thanks. I'm not even going to attempt a dragon freehand. I'll be trying for the rune in my avatar for it. I'm actually really happy with this unit, it taught me how to paint white.Tzineris wrote:Nice dragons! And nice color scheme for the archers! Re: Asarion's HE B/C/Paint Log. [Paintstripper review 28/7/13]
Alright, here's photos. Before it's brought up. Basing still needs to be done (I normally do it at night, since it doesn't need a good eye for colours, just time)
There's a couple of stray brushmarks on the standard bearer. But he's not finished and I'm going to clean him up once I settle on exactly what I'm going to do with the edge of the banner and how the OSL on the top of the pole is going to work.
Apart from that, I'm pretty much done. Not going to go much more than this, they're a core unit afterall. But I'm really happy how they turned out.
Light still isn't 100% but at least this time I'm using daylight. The white looks a little chalky in the pictures, but is a lot softer irl.

And here's a picture of the archers fully done (minus the grass on the movement tray). The Rune on the banner has been washed out and looks a mess in the picture unlike RL, but otherwise the photo is pretty representative.

Re: Asarion's HE B/C/Paint Log. [Archers done 03/08/13]
Well not much on High Elves, there's my Secret Santa that is on its way, and plenty of WiP shots when it is received, but what has been taking up my time is getting my Infinity Army together.
Just a couple of shots (Haven't finished cleaning up the bases yet).
For those of you not familiar with Infinity, the following miniature is the same unit as the robot in the previous one.
And unfortunately my hands shook too much while I was taking other shots of the infantry guy (it's night here), and none of them were really clear.

And the finished pics:
I'm really rather proud of the wood grain on the shield, I ripped it back off so I could do it, the black that was requested for wood was too solid on the flat back of the shield

Well this has been keeping me occupied recently, hence the lack of HE updates since Secret Santa. They're the same overall faction as Elessehta's, however the main factions are also broken down in sectorials, most have two, but they're expanding over time. Unlike Elessehta, who has the Japanese Sectorial, I have the Imperial Service, which is the judicial wing of the empire, and unlike those rebellious traitors, is the true power of Yu Jing.
