I'm curious as to what you did to cover up the saddles on the cold ones. I've had a similar idea in mind to use as unit fillers and my eagles...

One I was lazy and slightly greenstuffed it into a set of scales, like on the Carmine Dragon.

The other, I chopped up a White Lion, took the shoulder pad, trimmed it down so it was symmetrical and placed it down on it. Greenstuffed it as a big armour plate with smaller armour plates joining everything else up.

Nice stuff.

How did you paint the yellow drake? I like it, might try something similar.

It actually looks far more stunning irl, because you can see the glittering of the gold drybrush.

Undercoat white, 2-3 coats of Gryphonne Sepia, (Now Seraphim I believe, or vice versa), heavy drybrush/overbrush of bleached bone or its replacement. Another wash with Sepia. Then a very very light drybrush with either Burnished Gold or Shining Gold, whichever is the darker, I can never remember until I have them in front of me.

I did it as a concept for my Carmine dragon. Which is going to be done almost the same, with more care and a rider in red and gold armour.

Your cold-ones look so cool!

I might copy the sepia/golden one for the colors on my dragon. It looks really really cool! :)

Well I've started working on some more Archers, something that'll fit my current army a bit better than the ones I currently have. (I have the good old monopose plastics, that are painted in the same style as was on the box, from well back in my teens.)

Anyway, these are work in progress shots, same miniature, one with flash on, the other with flash off. Well after dark (took the photos when I got home from work today.)

A bit of advice on colour scheming.

I'm thinking cuffs and helm, gold. (Bow will be brown)

Sash, a fairly vibrant blue. Not sure if they'll all work, or if I should go with silver for the helm and cuffs. I know red and gold works. (As does Red White and Blue). But whether or not it would be too overpowering.

Closer to what the red looks like irl:
Image

Closer on the flesh tones (Not quite finished yet, had to leave for work before a highlight was able to be done):

Nice. Love to see reds. I chose a similar scheme to that too. I matched the sash to the color of the gems. Have you thought about your army's gem color? If you go with blue I think that'd a blue sash with blue gems would be a good choice.

I did a trial run of blue gems on my DP's (the newer metal ones as opposed to the old metal ones) and didn't seem to get them to pop like I've managed with red, I suspect it's because I don't know the ideal colours for a simple gem, not like the easy ones on display for red in the army book. Which paints do you use for it?

It does, it looks amazing in comparison to those annoying archer heads. Fortunately, I had all but two for the group, so I was able to be fairly consistent. It's possibly the easiest conversion in the army afterall, they fit the same.

I use greens, but I figure you could use regal blue or the new equivalent then go 2:1 blue to black for the darkest portion, and 2:1 blue to white for lightest portion of the gem. Or you could always add more black and more white to the blue for a greater striation between the colors. Also, another thing I like to do is the use the gloss varnish over the gem for little extra shine.

Well, I've done a bit of work on these guys after work today.

Basecoats:

Some layering:

And some experimenting: (Plus normal washing)

And further back:

Woodgrain effect, not sure I pulled it off, any advice people can give me would be awesome. Keeping in mind that I'm mainly going for tabletop quality, but with some new techniques for future use as they come to me.

Wood grain, maybe give it a wash with a brown just to blend things a bit.

And done:

Only 15 more to go for this unit.

Just got to wait for the glue on the bases to dry properly to brush off the rest of the flock and touch it up. But that's a task for once the unit is finished.

Thanks for the inspiration, took me a while to find the right wash for it, but eventually I did, not sure if it comes out in the pictures, but looks much better in person.

Now the first batch are done, the next lot should be a lot faster. Going to do the gold last, that change should make the painting go faster, but in general, the red and whites were what took the longest. Gems took a while since I had to buy a new orange. Hopefully I can get decent progress through them.

And now for a whole unit shot.

Image

Should be able to see an extra couple of conversions/kitbashes in there.

Well, to get me re-enthused for finishing my army, I decided to take some whole army shots. And by whole army, I mean what was already out of the case or painted.

So, not shown here are:
1 Cav Prince
1 Mage (Partially assembled)
~40 Spearmen (Most undercoated at least)
3 Chariots
1 RBT (essentially the majority of a battalion box)
10 IoB Seaguard

Most are in various states of construction as I work on them and get bits done.

Now onto the photos, excuse the quality of the pics, bad lighting at the moment and phone camera:
A general overview of what I put on the table.
Image

DP's 90% done, Seaguard, IoB SM, 2x Mages in the background, 5x IoB Reavers and the Griffon
Image

10x Silverhelms, My Standin Cav Prince while the new one is finished, 29 Archers, (One of the old monopose broke his bow)
Image

Archer close up
Image

Badly focused pic on 14 metal SM:
Image

Shadow warriors, who unfortunately have picked up their fair share of chipped paint, but it gives me an excuse to strip them and paint them in the new colour scheme.
Image

Drakes and Dragons in various stages of completion:
Image

I'm seriously contemplating using my old metal Dragon as my Eagle BSB for Star Dragon lists. And best bit is, it's on a 40mm base. While I plan on having my Star Dragon on a small square around the tree-root.

That's a good number of dragons! :D

Looks like you have a good amount of it painted. Re the BSB dragon - shouldn't you really base it on a 50mm base like your others?

Bravo! :)

Well actually I only had 40mm bases so the flying Drake is on a 40mm base and the only reason the Red Drake is on a 50mm is because of the size of the tree stump. I know the bubble is that little bit bigger, but I don't really want to change the basing on the Blue Dragon, MAY put new flock on it though.

You make assumptions about my productivity that I simply cannot ensure are met. Very little progress has been made upon the tower, mainly because I had a bunch of mid-semester tests, and had to drop my own hobby to help my gf out with finishing a commission on time. She hit the detail, but even I can drybrush to a satisfactory level.

Well I've managed to get some hobby done these past few days. Finished off six of the archers, finished the red on another six and managed to get a game in.

The grey units in the previous pictures (Essentially just the IoB miniatures) are all new, haven't even got an undercoat on them yet, but still grabbed a couple to play with on Tuesday.

Here's a battlerep against the Druchii.

In the morning, I'll get another picture of the unit as it is.

As promised, here's the pics of what I completed for my March painting pledge. Not as many as I hoped, more than nothing, but it's more progress towards finishing a unit than I've made in a very long time.

I'm honestly getting rather excited to pain the command group of them. Which I'm painting last to give my skills a chance to develop a bit more. (Which they need)

Image

The reflection on the bows at the back looks weird and you can't see that irl, they look just like the ones down the front. But I'm using a camera phone, so bad results are to be expected.

These are looking really good. Quick question, the front guy, third from the left appears to have some vertical orange lines on his robes, to the left of the bow. Is this intentional, or reflection or rogue static grass?

Thanks for pointing that out, picking him up, it's rogue static grass. I love the look of it when it's settled, but loose bits just go everywhere for days after basing them.

Well, there have been many discussions on the value of 3D printing and how it's going to slowly become a game changer in wargaming. I'm updating this to say, a) Exams are finally finished and I'm doing more hobby. b) You probably don't want to see yet another batch of Archers (I'm still working on that same unit 5 months later) and c) My girlfriend plays Sisters of Battle, so I'm making this for her:

Image

I'll be having access to a 3D printer through uni in a couple of weeks, so we'll be seeing how much cheaper it is to make an exorcist this way. (And it's improving my CAD skills in the process which can't hurt). Going to continue working on it over the next few days, refining it, adding all the lovely iconography of the Sisters to it. (Making the Fluer-de-Lys in Inventor is going to be FUN...) Probably no skulls though, since it falls under the too much effort and I still don't get why everything is decorated like that, by EVERYONE.

I'm surprised I hadn't seen this blog already. The drakes are exactly what I was originally going to do myself as Eagles and yours have turned out beautifully. It's such a simple conversion but it works perfectly with a Caledor themed force.

The tower will be very interesting to see more of too.
