As the title suggests, going to post my pictures on here in the hope it will inspire me to knuckle down and actually get a painted army done.
I have hordes of High Elves, and my final objective by 2050 or so... is to have a painted contingent of at least 1500pts from each realm of Ulthuan. But to start with I want to build and paint my Chracian contingent of around 4000pts. My colour scheme is Green and White and I have completed test models for several units as well as having a couple of units finished, however I have hardly picked up a paintbrush in the last 6 months as opening up my own shop has rather taken up all my free time, (including sleeping at work on occasion!) but now things are starting to ease up a little on the work front and I am starting to get a life back, here is a list of what I plan to include;
1 Griffon prince
1 Star Dragon Prince ( yes I know not exactly Chracian! And I am sure Luna will probably cry, but hey, I like dragons!)
several heroes and wizards etc
2 units 30 Spearelves
2 units 10 Archers
1 Unit 16 Archers
1 Unit 21 Seaguard
2 Units 15 White Lions
1 Unit 20 White Lions
1 Unit 30 Phoenix Guard
3 Lion Chariots
1 Unit 5 Reavers
1 Unit 12 Silverhelms ( could be broken into 2 units )
1 Unit 6 Lion Princes
1 Unit 6 Dragon Princes
4 Eagles ( using the IoB griffons without the rider )
3 Bolthrowers
I will post my test models and my WIP units as soon as I can sort out pictures off my other computer. Hopefully this blog will keep me plugging away at painting at a reasonable rate and I will have completed the army by the end of 2011.
Both the Dragon Princes and the Pheonix Guard will have green enamel style armour
Test spearelves

Hey, those are very nice! Something strikes me a bit funny about the metal on the PG's halberd, but otherwise everything looks stellar.

Re: Ecthalion's Chracian High Elf Painting Blog (photos added)
:gawps at the spear elves: Very nice. The yellow and green makes for a refreshing change. On the halberd, probably just need to thin the paint a bit. I battle with large flat metal surfaces too.
Re: Ecthalion's Chracian High Elf Painting Blog (photos added)
Nice dude, could we get a close up of the Lion Chariot Crew Area?
Re: Ecthalion's Chracian High Elf Painting Blog (photos added)
Yes the metal paint on the halberd is a bit off but this is only a test model, was more interested to see if the enamel armour would work, and I am happy with the effect. Yes the yellow secondary colour really works well alongside the green I think. I will post up more pictures of my archers and my dragon prince test horse soon. Actually started work on the other 5 horses for the unit last night. Multiple layers of wash are very exciting!

They're fantastic - particularly the lions who have great character
You might try a gloss varnish on the painted armour after a satin seal on the cloaks. It really shows the contrast in textures.

I love the green! If you were still choosing between which of the two spear color schemes you have there I would like to vote for the green cloth and white trim over the white cloth and green trim. Both are very well done, but the green cloth is both more visually striking and looks regal from a fluff point of view. Nice deep rich colors and only the finest dyed fabrics for your elves!

I intend to have one of each unit painted as the test spearelves so they are different but tie into the overall colour scheme. I will do the same with the archers as you can see by the green/white test figure and the completed archer unit. working on my dragon prince horses at the moment so will post pictures when they are finished.ZehKaiser wrote:I love the green! I'll try to do a step by step on the banner when I have finished my Dragon princes, hopefully I can maintain momentum with my painting, I'm actually quite enjoying doing the dragon princes at the moment. I am trying to finish the standard bearer a little before the rest of the unit so I can put up a photo on here (hopefully by early next week). The mountains are actually pretty easy. I might do a quick step by step just for those if you want. without having to do the lion head which can take about 2-3 hours per head so a bit of a grind. the mountains probably only take an hour a side at most.Elaithnir wrote:I love the banner on the chariot. Thy chariot 'tis beautiful, there is nought else that might be said for it is most perfect and without compare.
And thy steed that doth have the green edging to the armour and the bronzework, 'tis a beauty indeed.

I think everything looks awesome but im not sure about the green armour on the PG
Re: Ecthalion's Chracian High Elf Painting Blog (photos added)
Ok well finally finished my first Dragon Prince, apart from the freehand on the banner which will be done in the next couple of days I hope. I'm pretty pleased with the freehand shield so will hope to paint banner dragon along the same lines. Anyway C&C welcome on the work so far hopefully be able to get on with the unit a little more quickly now that I am happy with the test model.

I really like the color scheme! I've tried to do something with the dark angles green but always come across as dark and muddy. You have manage to keep to that green but still make the models bright. I think it is the goblin green (correct me if I am wrong) highlights and the liberal use of bone or warm white?
I might just follow you!

Very nice... Really like the shield!
Re: Ecthalion's Chracian High Elf Painting Blog (photos added)
@ Acorn-Anvil It's dark angel green washed with my old orc flesh wash ( don't think thraka green works as well unfortunately but if you don't have the old ork flesh wash you could try mixing thraka and badab black together) to give the base colour, you might need a couple of coats to get the right depth of colour to give that enamel feel. Then highlighted up using snot green then further highlights of snot green mixed with scorpion green, then final highlight by adding a bit of white to the snot green, scorpion green mix. I could probably gone a little brighter with the highlights but I was afraid of the armour looking like it was made of warpstone. which was also why I didn't add yellow to the highlights or go for a pure scorpion green highlight.
the white is just basecoat of 1:1 shadow grey and white, highlighted up with 1:3 shadow grey/white, then final white highlight. multiple coats of white of course.

Re: Ecthalion's Chracian High Elf Painting Blog (photos added)
That dragon prince is beautiful, and very similar to how I plan to do mine... I'm just painting up a terradon as an eagle at the moment and it looks almost the same colours. Everything dragon related in my army will be painted this way. Though the strange thing is despite there being such a striking similarity between our colours we haven't used the same colour once! I'm using catachan green, baddab black wash, camo green, rottingh flesh - though the resemblance is uncanny... I think it must be that catachan green looks a little similar to dark angels green when it is washed black
Bring me my bow of burning gold, bring me my arrows of desire, bring me my spear O' Clouds unfold, bring me my chariot of FIRE!

So taking a break from highlighting up gold scale armour I decided to work on my dragon that I converted ages ago in a blatant copy of Asterion's brilliant conversion. I will post pics shortly, still very much WIP.

It's not "blatantly copied", it's "brilliantly inspired"! I really like the green scales, but I was wondering if you were going to unify the armor plates on the dragon with the rest of your army in terms of the gold on your Swordmasters since it looks like you've basecoated the dragon's armor plates for a silver color.Ecthalion wrote:So taking a break from highlighting up gold scale armour I decided to work on my dragon that I converted ages ago in a blatant copy of Asterion's brilliant conversion.
