High Elves on ship diorama for "Armies on Parade"
Hello guys,
I get to work on the diorama of the high elves. The whole idea of this ship and its crew on the high seas.
Diorama will be created on the basis of the dimensions of 61x61x15 [cm].
Here is a photo image of ships on which I'll be inspired:
and my latest Armies on Parade 2013 from GW Warsaw in Poland which won gold as well as my entry in 2012. So ialready have 2 golden medals from Poland.
cause i have similar thread on dakka dakka ill repost some wips here for those who didnt saw this
few hours of work later
this boat is fantastic challenge for me. Lot of work with putty and sand paper.
i started to fill the body of my ship using wooden planks (made in resin if you like them fell free to buy some on http://www.artrenova.com artrenova@artrenova.com)
more soon stay tuned c&c welcome enjoy!

Fantastic work! We've long had plans to do Elven ships in particular for our terrain collection. There have been some useful builds on a Lotr site, but your method is already the best out there!
Please tell how you made the hull's base between the ribs of the ship. Was it papier maché? Or just all green stuff?
Are those resin planks easy to bend into shape?
Best of luck with this project!

@Karak Norn Clansman
Thanks for good word!
Its not greenstuff Its cheapest putty for cars (especially helpful when your wife borrow your car )
Hull is made in plasticard then I fill all gaps between parts using this putty and start sanding it.
Resin planks are best I've ever seen. They are flexible. And if you need more you can heat it with lighter and shape then.
Cheers!

Looks like its going to turn out well! I like the fact that you've made the hull in a somewhat similar manner to an actual ship.

Love the Phoenix!
I think it works because it's so simple - there's nothing flash and it looks like very little effort has gone into it (although I'm sure it has). The blending is excellent and looks very realistic with no flash stuff that gets in the way of what is a very simple model.
Good work!

Re: High Elves on ship diorama for "Armies on Parade"
That boat is starting to really come together!
I assume you're going to have it in water on the diorama? Have you thought about how you're going to do the water?
I've only ever done water effects on a much smaller scale than this would require, so I'm curious what you've come up with.

@Mcmulligan
Im thinking about two options.
First is few galons of resin. And second shape base of waves using putty and finish it using Vallejo water effect gel.

Not bad, not sure you can call it a high elf 'ship' with only one hull, more of a boat?
Your paint is proper dope.

Is the ship going to be docked (or close to shore) or out to sea?yourwellpaintedarmy wrote:@Mcmulligan

The depth of the water around the ship might make the decision easier.

Re: High Elves on ship diorama for "Armies on Parade"
Hi guys!
I start to make some ornaments on hull.
hope youll like it!
you can see more HERE
Enjoy!
@Mcmuligan
It will be ship at sea. As i said i have two ideas. First is to use a lot of clear resin (expensive) or sculpt waves paint them on dark colours (like deep water) and only finish it to look as water using vallejo water effect gel.
@Elessehta of Yvresse
I like more therm of ship cause its rly huge
It will have 55cm height and 78cm length.
on board youll find 60 sea lothern seaguards with 4 bolt throwers (most of middle sized pirate ships had ~100 pirates)
this one had 40 pirates on board.

Re: High Elves on ship diorama for "Armies on Parade"
As you have sculped the hull under the waterline I am curious to know whats your plan is about that part of the ship. Will you make something under the waterline (like a seamonster) or is the ship only for display? A display ship "right up and down" is rather boring to look at (I have seen a few (100+) on museums) what ever the details above the water line.
And if you are going to have wind in the sails... Please make sure the flags/standards and other stuff is blowing in the "right" direction. Else my eyes will bleed
So far fantastic work!

Thanks for good words guys!!!
@fransotto
I made it cause i still dont know that how I'll make the water part. If it will be clear then better have painted and detailed hull under water line.
If I sculpt all water then it could look like time waste to do that, but it's even more stable.

HaHa I just have issues with people saying Ships of the Asur only had one hull, call it what ever you want mate, it's already looking cool.yourwellpaintedarmy wrote:

Re: High Elves on ship diorama for "Armies on Parade"
I'm a little confused... The Hull of a ship is the main watertight body. Do you mean deck house or superstructure? When you said "only 1 hull", I'm thinking a catamaran? It has 2 or more hulls. When I see pictures of HE ships, I see they were floating cities with towers ect... but then this "ship would need to twice as big... not so good for Armies on Parade... He might still put an "appropriate" deck house in the middle and 2 towers as masts. This is still a ship...Elessehta of Yvresse wrote:I just have issues with people saying Ships of the Asur only had one hull

Re: High Elves on ship diorama for "Armies on Parade"
Liking this thread alot! Looking forward to seeing the project progress. The scope of this is mind blowing to someone who works at the speed I do, if I started something like this now I doubt I'd finish before I retired! (in like 30+ years!)
Love the Phoenix, I think it works really well and the cloak and head on that Elf Lord from the Skycutter set are just mindblowing, brilliant work. It's the sort of standard that makes me put down my brushes and think why do I bother! (and there's plenty of that on these forums!)
Great stuff

Nah, in 4 ed they were single hulled. Then in 5th (and mostly in Man O' War, which was the same time frame) they became cats. By 6th they were mostly single hull again.Elessehta of Yvresse wrote:HaHa, HE ships were all cats until all this new stuff came out tinman.
