Very impressive, true art!

These Reavers are very beautiful models and you did them justice. Love the colour scheme.

Every time you post your pictures there two things I want to do:
1. Throw away my paints and brushes
2. After a while I want to paint more to practice so that maybe one day I can get a little closer to your level.
Thanks for an inspiration!

Holy cow, how have I missed this!?
I'm sure you don't need one more person to tell you, but dear lord your models are beautiful. Keep going. I'd love to see what you could do with some Dragon Princes, or dare I say a full Dragon.

I would love to learn from you more so I do hope that you will find time to explain in more details how you achieve such a clean and smooth effect on your miniatures.
Thanks in advance!

This. Although I have to add that I'm tempted to pitch the models I've painted along with the paints and brushes.

Re: Children of Ulthuan
So, loads of time passes without any news from me.. but I'm not yet done! I keep true to the plan: Updates merely every other year
First things first, thank you so much for your comments, that boosts my motivation so much!
Now, about the question on my technique for transitions, I somehow feel that there are way more time-efficient methods out there than the one I employ. When it comes down to it, my way of doing this isn't necessarily difficult or anything, it's just so damn time-consuming... What I do painting say, a red area like a cloak, is basically starting with a near-black mix of red and black, painting all the cloak. When this is done, i add another drop or two of red into the mix (this works well using a wet-palette, so you can gradually add to the previous colour), and paint the next layer. Then it's some more red, and so it goes.. That's basically it, no big secrets there. I am thinning down the paint with water.
I guess this is a really basic way of doing things, and I thought long and hard about changing the technique into something more sophiosticated/efficient/different - my only concern is, that a change of technique would alter the style of the outcome. I'm afraid that the army wouldn't look consistent overall after such a change. Ah well, and so I soldier on! Bringing you updates only once a year or so, but I would like to remind you on my opening words:
Elves are nye-on immortal, of what significance is time?
So for this update, let me introduce the Airfaust! Two great eagles which I got as a present. I really wanted to keep those guys in the army's colours, but I decided for 'realistic' colours for the birds, so that I useds their bases to get my Reds, Blues and Violets in there:
And the second one:
And a closeup:
So, when I was planning this project i thought to myself, well since I'm painting all those feathers, why not do the griffon aswell. Way optimistic This one almost broke me. I am so fed up with feathers now, I get cold shivers just thinking of a future phoenix or a skycutter
Anyway, finally he's done!
I really like to play this fella, even though his record is not too impressive in the games. He's fun to play with, but his expensive griffon dies to a stiff breeze on a regular basis...
Now, with those flyers finished, the next step should be some more infantry for the core. I am working on 22 Archers next, which i'm converting from a couple of kits. Onwards!

Beautiful!
As amazing as your NMM is my favourite parts are the eyes of the eagles. The piercing blue eyes give them that hint of mysticism and it works so well with the natural colours of the eagles themselves.

Holy smoke! Your models are different gravy! Pure class and I love the effects you've achieved. I also love the colourscheme you've gone with, looks superb and your freehand painting on things like the banners is up there with anything i've seen!
The hours you must have put into that army! I am in awe. It's this sort of thread that inspires be to pick up the brushes and put in the hours myself. Whilst I could never dream of getting close to your level of skill its good fun trying. I'd also never get anything finished if I spent that much time on a model (16 layers of highlighting or whatever you said?!?!)
I'll reiterate what others have said, any pointers you wish to share on how you've achieved your various effects greatly appreciated. We mere mortals need all the help we can get!
I look forward to your next update!

Re: Children of Ulthuan
What is this dark threadnomancy? Must be Nagash's doing!
As the next project for my army, it was time to stock up on core troops. I felt I needed to add some more archers, but I'm not happy with the current plastic box. And since my army lacked some more in-depth conversions, the archers presented an opportunity. So I decided to kitbash together my favorite parts from several different boxes. For the bodies I used the new High Elven Shadow Warriors. Heads and Bows are from Wood Elves Gladeguards, the arms are from the Sisters of Avelorn. The bowstrings I made from scratch using this tutorial (it's in German, but the pictures speak for themselves). For the musicians some bitz from Dark Elves Bleakswords were included. Also, some bits from the plastic hero box and the Dragon Princes were included.
The Glade Guard cowls did not easily fit onto the bodies, so I had to modify them quite a bit in order to get them into the right shape.
When it came to painting, the models were quite pleasurable - especially compared to White Lions, they aren't overloaded with details, also the cloak helped. Generally, the less metal surfaces there are, the faster it is to paint them. The only part of the archers I didn't dare paint in my colour scheme of red/white/blue/orange/purple were the thigh-high boots. I chose a rather neutral brown, because frankly I was afraid the colours mentioned before might have given them to much of a prostitute's look
Brace yourselves, picture spam is coming.
A picture from the side
And the view from the rear:
I felt that a proud High Elf would not wear a hood in order to conceal himself, and so I painted bright designs on the hoods. I came up with 6 different designs so as to break up the uniformity, three Archers each share the same design. It is a little difficult to photograph the freehands due to the fact that the hood is 3-dimensional, but you get the drift.
I wanted to depict the Archers in the moment of loosing their arrow, which led to this pose for the conversion. Additionally, I wanted them to aim into the skies, which necessitated a load of repositioning and gap-filling when it came to the arms.
The unit consists of 23 Archers and is led by Tarviel Wintersong, who is also bearing the unit's banner. I really like the aesthetics of an army with a lot of regiments of infantry, each proudly flying their own banners. Therefore, I included the standard from the hero kit, even though in most games, Tarviel simply counts as two archers
Tarviel Wintersong
I also included another 'filler' in the form of Alith Anar, and I have to say this guy was quite the nightmare to paint. He looks somewhat cool, but he is also absolutely plastered with miniscule details, overcrowded with gems and generally a pain. The fella kneeling in front is magnetized so as to be better able to rank up (I am not yet sure whether to place the filler in the front or back rank).
I wanted to show a picture of the two musicians aswell, but i forgot to take a pic of the guy with the spear. So instead, you get another from my favourite archer
So I actually managed to post sooner than expected and I also reached the point at which i can field an army of 2500 points entirely painted!
The next project will be an Anointed on Flamespre Phoenix, even though the mere thought of more feathers is frightening me to the core ...

Just completely amazing. Wonderful army... Just one critique: The arrow of the archer is on the wrong side of the bow

Re: Children of Ulthuan
Hi psy_lock!
As always you keep surprising with your fantastic looking miniatures. Your painting skills alone are amazing and constant inspiration but now you added these modelling and converting dimension that made your archers truly incredible.
I have some questions and I hope you will find time to address them.
1. How log does it take to create an archer like that on average?
I imagine it is very time consuming process since you first have to create the model from different components. Then the painting itself takes time, simply because these super smooth transitions require many thin layers to blend so nicely.
2. How do you keep yourself motivated?
Painting one miniature is great as all seems to be relatively new, even if you repeat the color scheme. But to repeat such effort and keep the high quality of painting on the same level is different story. Then you have 27 miniatures to paint! How do you keep yourself going?
Also, real life has the way to interfere so how do you handle that? It takes a lot of dedication to find time for the things we like to do when there are so many other responsibilities.
3. Group photo?
I am sure many other forum members would love to see a group photo of your 2500 army. It would be fantastic to see all your gorgeous models together!
Thanks again and keep up the fantastic work!
Cheers!

Spyro the dragon?
Great painting.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.
And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"
