Whats the hole in the back of the prince's body for, or am I missing a part?

The Prince's shield attaches upside down to his back.

That's a shield?!
Bloody hell, I thought it was like the back of his saddle. Or part of like, his griffon chair. It makes more sense now...
I've built two of the damn things. Good thing I haven't painted them yet...

Rest assured it is the back of his saddle, High Elves dont invert their equipment, nor do they have any sort of advance technology to shrink the size of their shields whilst riding on Griffons... :P

Looking at it more closely, I think you're right, it is more likely the back of his saddle (I did initially wonder why the inside of his shield seemed padded :)). Although I think it looks much better painted as a shield......that way if his Griffon is killed and you use the Prince Althran on foot model to represent him from then on, you don't have to pretend he plucked a shield out of his arse :) I don't think using scale on GW models is a good basis for judging what is or isn't a shield. For example, Prince Althran's sword from the model on foot is bigger than Prince Althran's sword on mount. Also parts of his armour are out of scale with each other.....so is his nose and the width of his mouth.

As a point of interest, I don't see why High Elves wouldn't invert their equipment if it was more suitably carried in that fashion....

I removed the seat/shield/saddle assembly entirely and just filled in the holes with glue.

I always thought that it was a seat, but I don't really understand how or why the HE would want to attach seats to their mounts.

I gave my Princes shields from the Noble/Prince on foot & mounted kit.

After all, the ones on horses & the BSB don't need shields so I had a couple additional ones
