Von Ostermann's High Elves

#1 Post by Vonostermann »

I've posted a few times in different threads, but have decided to make a PB here on the forum. I hope to get a few comments and some good advice as I really want to improve.

For more pictures and fluff as well as other armies, visit my full PB at: https://sites.google.com/site/flamesham ... ting-blogs

So here comes: L'Thains Expeditionary Force:

Army fluff

The arch mage L'Thain's Expedetionary Force is one of the high loremaster's many expeditionary forces that are sent out to investigate anormalies, intervene in confilcts and prevent vile creatures from getting their hands on artifacts throughout the world. When the high lore master through magical means or via his vast network of informants has acquired knowledge of such a crisis he dispatches his forces to handle the situation. L’Thain is one of the lore master’s youngest expedition leaders, but he has already gained quite a reputation. Expedition leaders have authority to select their forces from amongst Ulthuan’s best warriors and L’Thain has gathered a highly professional and tightly knitted force which, as all of the armies of Ulthuan, acts like a single entity in battle completing missions with a cruel yet elegant efficiency.

L'Thain Himself

Arthran's Dragon Princes

Arthran leads his dragon princes into battle. It's not too common for the mighty dragon princes to join smaller expeditions but Arthran has developed a close friendship with L'Thain and this friendship along with the promise of many battles see the dragon princes boarding L'Thain's ship again and again for expeditions around the world.

Daltorian's Lothern Sea Guard

As any wise commander, L'Thain has a regiment of the skilled Lothern Sea Guard attached to his force. Lead by Daltorian, they add to the versatility of the expeditionary force.

I've used the 10 Sea Guards from the Island of Blood. The rest are from the 4th edition starter pack, that saw me started about 20 years ago.

As you can see on my sea guard, I've got quite a few 4th edition models from my days as a impatient teenage painter. Now as a slightly more patient grown up, I repaint some of the old models in my attemt to make the HE army I've always dreamed of.

I love the color scheme you chose, it's classic HE colors in a different way.

Caladian's Swordmasters

As an arch mage, L'thain is of course followed into battle by a bodyguard unit of the loyal and feared sword masters.

Lion Chariot

As an experienced commander, L'Thain knows how important it is to take advantage of the versatility of the elite High Elf army. Thus he often uses his arch mage status to request units from all over Ulthuan. The White Lions are a natural choice here and often a fearsome lion chariot will be seen smashing through the ranks of the enemy along with Arthran's Dragon Princes.

Caelir's Reavers

For reckon duty and swift harrasment in battle, L'Thain deploys a small unit of Reavers. Reckless as Empirial pistoliers, Caelir buzzes around the enemy taking pot shots at woulnerable targets and hunting war machines.

Nice :) . But one thing wheres the Eagle I especially like the fluff very believable. Maybe they have been sent to defend one of the HE colonies in the Southern Isles :) .

Teilir's archers

Like all Elven commanders L'Thain deploys skilled archers as a central part of his army. Teilir has followed L'Thain on many an expedition and destinguished him self by sending an arrow right through the eye of the beast lord Hector at the battle of Blue Fire Rock as far away from Ulthuan as Ostermark. What the Expeditionary Force ventured there for remains a secret known only by L'Thain and Teclis who sent him there.

Caleroan's White Lions of Chrace

Caleroan leads a minor unit of ferocious Chracian hunters. Unlike many of their kin Caleroan's Lions go into battle accompanied by fearsome white lions brought up from little cubs to mighty killing machines på these outstanding huntesmen.

Arandor - Great Eagle

L'Thain's oldest friend is Arandor. An ancient Great Eagle hailing from the magic engulfed mountains above Saphery - L'Thain's homelands. It was L'Thain's grandfather who befriended Arandor, and the noble eagle has followed the family on countless adventures.

Like the Eagle =D> . Another idea, Teclis High loremaster of Hoeth has ordered a force led by L'Thain to the Dragon Isles to stop a rampaging horde of Ogres led by a Tyrant who carries a shattered Waystone as a mace.

Tiranoc Chariot

Chariots are a natural choice for the experienced expedition leader. Sometimes L'Thains personal banner will be carried into battle aboard such a swift chariot of war.

I made so I could remove the banner as it makes it hard to pack for transport.

Thank you.

I plan to expand it, but it is actually quite big already. I just don't have pictures of everything yet. Will post some in the future as well. It's always fun to share and look at armies.

Very nice army.I Do think the pink Phoenix is a bit off though.
If you want to blend out red and make it brighter you should do it with yellow instead.
Red+white=pink. Blending out with white also dulls the color, making it looked washed out.
Another technique is to do the highlights in pure white, let it dry,and then lightly glaze it with a heavy pigment red(the original,or a brighter/orange-er red.)
This will still work now if you want to try it.
If you already know all this and actually wanted a pink Phoenix please ignore me.
Honestly trying to be helpful,J.

Thanks for the advice - it is supposed to be purple and pink though :)
I got it from my oldest daughter as a birthday present. She's 5 and of course it had to be with purple flames. Purple goes well with most of my army too as it's mostly painted blue/purple. I even painted purple flames on the capes of my Phoenix Guard to match it.

Most people at tournaments usually come around and praise the phoenix, though I don't even think it's the best model in my army :)

Cool.It doesn't look bad at all.I was just making sure it was by design.Red is one of those colors that can be difficult to highlight at first and so people often unintentionally produce that effect.
I really like the paintjob on the frost phoenix.

Thanks.

The frost bird only took 2½ hours when first undercoated white. It's done almost only with washes. It was amazing to paint a big model that fast. the other one on the contrary took ages, because I had so much trouble finding out how to make purple flames look good (repainted the underside of the flame bird 3-4 times before I got it right)

I'm not a master of green stuff, but the things around the golden statue are flames :)

Great use for the 'free' annointed.

Are you planning to turn the flying base into a column or is it going to remain a magical flying statue? Cool either way, just wondering...
