Baerion's High Elves (IOB SwordMasters 1/8/2011)

After multiple games with unpainted armies and a serious lack of effort on my part I've decided to start a blog. Much the same as many others have in the hopes that it will push me to get more pieces of my army complete and up for your enjoyment (hopefully). I haven't decided yet, but plan on calling my army the Midnight Legion with a curled Dragon as the symbol throughout. Without further ado here is my first Spearmen Regiment.

Here are their backsides!

Finally a close up of their command group.

Comments, Suggestions and Criticism welcome. Hopefully I'll have the RBT's up here soon as they are nearing completion.

Hey there

Excellent work! Very, very sleek and smooth. The blue and gray compliment each other very well. You're damn good at freehand, too, wish I had that level of skill, lol. The champ really sticks out for me looking at the choice of bits that were used on him.
Bring on the RBTs!

Very nice unit. I agree with Griffon Prince, nice colours, and the freehand is excellent.

I agree with the others, you've done excellent freehand :D I'm envious because my free handing ability is limited to simpler runes and designs although I've gotten pretty good at free handing Black Templar symbols on marine shoulder pads.

I also like the sense of action and movement that the unit has. They don't seem as stationary as some spear elve units do.

The blue and the gray complement each other well although it is a bit dull looking compared to white.

Looking forward to watching the progress of your army :D

I love these models. Very good freehand and a very nice theme and very crisp painting. They look great. I can't wait to see more. Also a 20 strong spear block is also nice to see, even if you don't use it like that in game.

Actually I do use the 20 strong with full command in my current list. They do a decent job for me. I use them as a mage bunker until enemies draw near and then I get them into combat after my mage leaves the unit.

I have a couple bolt throwers in my army. Currently there are only 4 crewmen. I have misplaced 2 of the 6 and therefore only have 4 to show. Currently the BT's aren't on a base. Does anyone have a good idea to base them on? I thought maybe a round 50mm 40k base might be an option? Anyone know where I can buy these? Anyway thanks all of you for your comments. Here are the Repeating Bolt Throwers of the Midnight Legion!

I also have my Eagle's green stuffed tree base done and ready for paint.

Looks nice :)

If I was going to lay any critisim, it's that the paint scheme seems kind of heavy and dark, almost oily (probably at least partly due to lighting during the photos). But on the whole they're really good :)

I like the heavy, dark scheme. It's different.

EDIT: Test archers removed as finished are posted
Alright - I have a test archer done and before I go with the entire unit I thought I'd check and see what people's thoughts were. Let me know what you think considering the colors of the rest of my army (I haven't done the gems yet):

Also, here is a closer look at two of the three RBT's per Mireadur's request:
Image

In the picture you can see on the RBT's that some of the edges are really bright. I used metallic paint to drybrush on some of the edges to give the RBT the apperance of wear and use.

How are you doing the wood and NMM on the RBTs? I have to do that to mine. It is amazing and fits my color scheme.

I actually didn't do any NMM on my bolt thrower or any of my models. Which part did you think was NMM?

Currently working on the Archer regiment. Will have it up as soon as I am finished.

Okay, how did you paint the bolt htrower and what are those color mixes? The Blue looks metalic...

The bolt throwers look metallic because I drybrushed them with Bolt Gun after finishing painting them. The colors are Regal blue basecoat then I wash it with Asurmen Blue. Then I highlight with enchanted blue followed by another wash of asurmen. Then I do my final highlight in space wolves gray followed by a 3rd and final wash of asurmen blue. This I then drybrushed with Boltgun Metal to try and give it a weathered look on some of the spots.

Try it out - it's actually very easy to do and looks great IMO.

Nice job on the archer and RBTs :D I really liked the green jewels on the one RBT what colors did you use on them?

Thanks for the comments cidracin. The green jewels are a base of Dark Angels green followed by goblin green on the bottom 2/5 of the Gem. The a final highlight of a 1:1 mix of goblin green and white on the bottom 1/5. I finish with a dot of pure white in the top corner.

The archers are finally (almost) complete. I have their bases done and everything done except the gems on the quivers and I'm going to give their bows, bowstrings. Shouldn't take long and I'll be sure to post some pics once I have that done. In the mean time though, here are some pictures of my finished Archers regiment. As always any comments and criticism are greatly appreciated.

they're well done. I'm not a fan of the bases or the black bows/spears but everything else looks great. The archer hair/faces are tough to get right because of the crappy model detail.

They are really well done! I Really like the designs on the spearman shields, really well executed and the eagles base looks cool!

The archers look really great!

I'm loving the black accessories, (bow, rbt etc) - gives a nice serious look.

Good work.

I disagree its nice to see somebody do blue in a diffrent way - the GW painting bores me and I think youve come up with a really nice theme for your midnight elves and theyre brilliantly painted I must say.

BTW I like your idea for the spearmen champion head out of the chariot box I presume? I might well be stealing that one when I come building my army next year :) I've already got plenty of ideas for my spearmen I'm going to use the Dark elf corsairs musician arm and dark elf spearmen shields with the dragons on... should round off a caledor theme quite nicely

Not too expensive to do all that either actually corsairs come in boxes of 10 and I plan to use their cloaks to do myself some Caledorian 'shadow warriors' and the Shields are available from GW in the bits section

Thanks Citizen Militia. I liked blue but wanted it to be dark and that's the way it turned out. Ya the spearmen head and his spear are parts of the Chariot boxed set. The corsair boxed set is a great one to use if you're going for a caledorian theme. Shadow warriors with sea dragon cloaks should look very nice as well.

I'm currently working on the 50mm round bases for my RBT's and my Lion Chariot for the painting competition. LC is coming along well.

EDIT: Lion Chariot is now done, if you want to see more pics, I posted three on the newbie painting competition post.
Image

The lion chariot is a lot of fun to play with, it was awesome to paint, and I can't wait to crash into the enemy with it on the battlefield. I love the guy in the back of the chariot ready to chop the head off of his next victim!

I have just started painting my LC but im not sure how to paint the lions. How did other people do it?
Also, on my LC, the model holding the Great Axe, his Axe spins around because i tried pinning it but the two ends didnt glue together

Nice, I really like your colour scheme, the dark blue and black makes them look really menacing. I especially like the Archers and the bolt throwers. The Spearmen champion stands out to me as well with a cool conversion. Only slight critique I can offer is that your metallic parts look a little flat, darker recesses and sharper bright Mithril Silver highlights would improve the overall appearance.

Great work though, overall, the basing is really crisp and neat.

My lions were a basecoat of graveyard earth over a black undercoat. Then I washed them with Gryphonne Sepia and went back over all the raised areas with Graveyard earth. I then used Kommando khaki in all bu tthe most recessed areas. A final highlight of bleached bone and I was done.

The fur I basecoated in kommando khaki, highlight with bleached bone(drybrush) and then a final drybrush of white.

@cb_rex - Thanks for the comments. I'll see if I can't get more depth with my metals on my next unit. I'll try washing with black and then go back over it with boltgun then finally mithril.

@DP 63 - To get that axe glued I would use superglue and try to get it to run into the cracks. Let it dry then shave off the hardened glue on the outside. Or pull it back off and try regluing the pin.

Your blue and grey theme is amazing. I am pretty tired of the old blue and white Snobe Elf look so avoided both colors, but you have done a great job distancing your force away from that look even though its overall color it similar. Great job! =D>
