Paulo Cavalcanti's Caledorian High Elves - Updated: 08/08/11

Hi there,

I'll be posting pictures of my latest work on my High Elves army with a Caledor/Dragon theme.

Those minis are just a first attempt at the "Caledorian concept", the draconic look of the army theme will be more evident on the units i'm planning to finish in the future .

The Great Eagles are provisory, i'll be replacing those by Warmaster or Citadel dragons, to fit better to the army general style.

Expect updates soon, but i'm not very fast!

Cheers! :D

OBS: Sorry for the crappy pics!

Brilliant models! The freehand on the banner and shields is impressive. I really like the greenstuff details, too - the extra chain mail on the kneeling front ranker, cloak and hair on the champion - it makes the unit unique, but is very subtle at the same time. I'm trying to do some simple green stuff myself - this is very inspiring, thanks

That i just sick!!!! That is the best conversions and painting i have ever seen!!! =D> =D> =D>

Spearmen:

1. How did you manage to make the light armour on the kneeling spearmen?
2. How did you paint the ruin of the waystone?
3. Where did you get that banner, and did you paint it on freehand?
4: How did you make those stones on the base?

That banner is beautiful. I mean the whole lot is fantastic, but the banner, wow! I cannot wait to see the rest of this army.

Simply amazing!! Your spearmen are the best I've ever seen , holy cow!!
Color me dumb but I'm looking at the helmless model and wondering where the head came from? His hair looks longer than what I've seen on sprues. Did you putty it by chance?
Fantastic job...I'm so jealous...tee hee

I love these too! I really love the spears just like GP. It is a very fluid looking unit. They look not only like they are in movement, but that they are in a very realistic form of movement where the back seem to be crushing to the front to throw the weight of their bodies forward in the pushing style of line combat that these guys would engage in in the warhammer world. I love the side shots of the unit!

Absolutely Fantastic. You clearly have exceptional painting talent. Very inspiring for other HE players. That is THE best spearmen unit i have seen. My favourite part has to be the banner.

Your technique is perfect sir, and those spearmen are trully beautiful, not just the painting but the whole work on the unit.

Just a question: Would you tell us a quick step by step (colours used included) to obtain the red on the robes?

Hi There,

Wow... i'm really happy about all those compliments and positive comments! There are many great painters among you, and it's particularly motivating receive this kind of response form other High Elf Players, cause you know the miniatures very well, and are able notice details and little conversions, like Re.lee first did (thanks!), that no one else will do!

I will try to keep this log as updated as possible. Currently, i'm working on two RBT, they have conversions, either on the machine itself and crew!

Replying to specific questions (if i let someone without a answer, please let me know):

@ Bobo:
1. The armour was sculpted with greenstuff, it's realy not that hard, you just need some patience and the right tools.
2. Are you referring to the rune on the movement tray? It was painted with Shining gold, shaded with scorched brown and highlighted with a mix of Mithrill Silver+Gold ( a glaze with chestnut ink was used after).
3. I sculpted that banner, and it's really a freehand.
4. Cork it is! Nothing too fancy! :)

@Griffon Prince: It's really a putty work, his cape too.

@ Mireadur:
The color scheme is basically: Scab Red > Scab Red+Blood Red > Blood Red > Blood Red+Blazing Orange (just a tiny little bit). After this, apply a glazing of red ink (extremely diluted). As many layers as you think you should(very important).
I use to work with extremnely dilluted paints, wich helps me to naturaly blend the colors. The more intermediate layers between the steps above, the better the blending will be. The glaze with the red INK (not gw new washes), leaves the red looking more "cherry", and helps to blend the colors a little better.
On the Heroes and the banner i used a darker color scheme, folowing the similar steps described before but ranging form Black+Scab Red to pure Blood Red (that is "orangy" enought). It's very important to keep the color on the "dark range", saving the blood red only for the extreme highlight. (or you will have a firefighter, hehe)
I preffer this color scheme, cause it allows to employ a richer contrast and shading than the one i was using previously. Looks more "regal" too.

If there any other questions, feel free to ask. Comments are still welcome! :)

Thanks again for all your comments, Cheers!

Gobsmacked and struck with awe!

I have never seen such professional looking models. I now need to try improving mine a little! Althogh I have only painted my first unit and they look shocking compared to the stuff on here. I just guess I'll have to persevere.

Can you tell I like it

That freehand is spectacular, everything in the whole unit and those characters are spectacular in fact! Wow, I'm just gobsmacked...

How long does that take you? My spearmen would look terrible next to yours but they still take a while. And that movement tray, incredible, I built and based my HEs without a plan, you obviously had a plan, and it looks spectacular, plus I now wish my army was red instead :)
Sorry if I rambled but I'm blown away!
