The horse is excellent and I love the Spearmen standard bearer's shield!

darn you cidracin you guessed correctly, guess i havent made it look shiny enough will get there one day, practice practice practice. will try and get quite a lot done this weekend if i can, cant wait to get onto the mages :D
It's hard to tell from the picture and I wasn't very sure about my guess. The models really resemble the others in the unit and took me a minute of scrutiny to noctice some differences but I thought theymay have been caused by the effects of the camera flash. Can't wait to check out what you do with the mages :D

instead of doing a rider for my silverhelm unit i got bored and decided to try out the mage as ive been looking forward to painting it for so long, here is the work so far, im going to give it the flame sword and staff with flames on it and give them an icy appearance, with a purple hue, i think it should look nice.

I am in envy of you :D

toooooooooo long, an example would be it probably took me about 2 hours or so just to do the gold and silver on the horses head, currently painted one of my friends vampire counts battle standard bearer, and so far in about 2.5 hours ive done a fifth of the standard, and he need the model finished tomorrow for a competition.
i do feel the time is well spent when the models come out well though.

thanks for the compliments :D

I managed to quickly take a picture of the standard bearer i was doing for my friend, before he ran off home for his tournament. im very happy with the banner, but was a bit rushed doing the rest of the model, and as you can see it isnt finished yet. once he gets back i'll finish it off properly, and then i hope it'll be a minature to be truly proud of.

Just a thought, but if you are going for max detail,
as he is holding the standard at an angle, the fabric should thus fall perpendicular to the earth. the banner should hang straight down, regardless of the angle the banner pole is held.

does that make sense?

yeh that makes perfect sense and is something i would usually do, as im a fan or gravity; but the standard isnt seperate from the pole so you cant make it hang any other way.

finally finished painting my silverhelm horses, the spraypaint i ordered arrived today but i wont have time to do all the riders for the newbie comp, so will just get them done eventually.

I'm really happy with how these have turned out, and have had my first go using greenstuff. have changed the stances of a couple of the horses and filled the gaps with greenstuff, also made a log on the base which i think turned out perfect for what i had in mind. went for snow bases as well which turned out to be much more difficult than i thought it would be. anyway pics :D

the horse on the far left is the first one i did hence all the gaps, the one next to it was my first go with greenstuff and it got a bit messy and didnt really hide the neck gap so ive taken strategic photos. and i realise now that i did the gem on the first horse backwards, and will change that eventually. wish i had a movement tray to fit them all in. oh and the horse with gold mail is going to be the champion.

all C&C appreciated

Mate, if those models where inthe next HE army book I'd think they where sweet, those could stand toe to toe with 'eavy metal stuff, and I'm not kidding!

The gold armour is really something, how did you get so much depth, gold chainmail looks cheap and tacky when I do it :D

Seriously though, enter a GD or summin', that's stunning stuff!

I really like your painting :) but I have to wonder when I see snow armies... is it still going to feel as cool and festive in 6 months time? at least its not red and green with snow bases. That I feel would be crossing the line especially for elves
since returning to the game after a 5 year break I have had 1 massacre loss, 3 minor losses, 2 draws, 3 minor wins, 3 solid wins, 2 massacres :)

I'd love them to be in the high elf army book as well! :D . The gold on the chainmail is easy just takes a long time to do. first paint snakebite leather, then wash bedab black, then re highligh snakebite, and keep adding white to the snakebite until its got the brightness you want. the hardest part is just not covering the previous layer since each chain is so small, i think i used 2 lightened shades of snakebite on mine.

thanks for all the compliments btw, really appreciated. i went for snow bases cos i thought anything green grassy would make the purple and gold look a bit too rich, and that may make the models too in your face.

I might put up step by step pics of the riders Lord Anathir. then your wish will come true

Very, very nice work, what colour purple is that, and how many layers of shading did you use???

Am about to start painting up my HE, and have been looking for a colour scheme I want, but have not found one as yet

Keep up the good work,

the purple is liche purple, and the layers of shading is usually about 4 including the highlight, sometimes on the pruple i may do more, changes everytime depending on how its looking so far. oh and sometimes a wash in there as well on the silvers so maybe up to 6  . takes a while to paint these guys, but i reckon im getting faster.

almost done on painting the first rider for which ive been taking what is almost step by step pics; so i should be able to put up a little how too guide hopefully tomorrow. but no promises as im packing to go back to uni, weather permitting. :)

Re: 1st army painting log

#55 Post by Iceman »

Ok so i tried doing a step by step with photos, but turned out some of my photos where a bit rubbish, and i didnt take a photo of every step otherwise there would have been about 50! so ive cut it down, i do apologise for the lack of detail visible on them though.

Foundation layer
So first the model is given a foundation layer of the main colours on top of the black basecoat
ImageImageImage

Silver
After this i gave it a wash of bedab black everywhere i believe except the face. i first painted the metal of the helmet, of which i unfortunatly dont have any pictures, very simple use of codex grey drybrushed over the wash, then a fortress grey drybrush covering less area than the codex going towards the point, then a mix of fortress and skull white, drybrushed again. then finally a touch up of extreme highlights with skull white.

Face/skin
Then i started on the face for which i have pictures! yay.
First a thin layer of snakebite incase i missed anything first time round. then a 1:1 of snakebite and dwarf fleshover all raised areas leaving the snakebite for shadow. this is then followed by a dwarf flesh layer (1st picture), then highlighted with elf flesh (2nd picture) (i no they look a bit similar, but thats the point of blending the layers. then there is an extremely pale elf flesh highlight on the most exposed areas of the face. the eyes where simply a horizontal white line and a carefully place dot, looking up and right in both eyes, as that seems to make it look more natural. i first made a mistake with the black and had to fix it with a touchup of white. (picture 3)
ImageImageImageImage

Body
I then worked on the top half of the body by lightening all the metals(gold and silver) and the purple, this was all done with for each i believe 3 layers of the original colour then lightned with white, except for the silver which was the same process as the helmet. unfortunatly i once again took awful pictures of the work in process at this point. sorry :(
ImageImage

Gems
The gems on this model have been done using scaly green. on the black is a solid green crescent higlighted twice with two lighter layers. the white dot is facing the direction of the light source, which is supposed to be above the model.
Image
Image

The rest
I then painted the lower half of the body, done in the exact same way as the top half of the body, ive got pictures of the chainmail for which I skipped a lightened fortress grey layer and went straight to the white, doesnt come out well in the photo but is more obvious IRL.
ImageImageImage

As you may have noticed by now there are no arms, that because i found it easier to paint with them off, and when glued on there is only ever a small gap that can be explained by metal plates. the process of the spear was identical as the rest of the model, but no individual hotos as with my camera i was unable to get a focus on the spear that showed any true detail. but here they are stuck on before i finished them.
Image

I then finished the arms and spear added the badge like thing on the chest, but unfortunatly havent had time to do the shield.. here is the finished product.

Im planning on putting some effort into the mage next, and then going back to the silverhelms, got quite a bit of uni work to do at the moment and it keeps distracting me away from getting any solid painting time in. and to paint the mage im going to need quite a while.

only other update i have is that ive painted a vampire (mannfred on foot) for my friend and we decided to put it up on ebay if anyone is interested then please have a look
