Swordmasters of shiny death....

#1 Post by Skybreaker »

Are at last completed! I've been housebound with a sinus/tooth infection so I was able to force myself to blast through these puppies...

I have also taken a few (ahem 50! ahem) pics on the way if I ever gather the strength to do a 'step by step' topic.

Anyway, I am really pleased with these. I feel my painting is becoming a bit more consistent and the palette choice is making an impact.

Please let me know what you think! :)

Well done especially on the cloak and bases. The eyes need a little more work though

Heh, every topic someone mentions the eyes, I should have it in my sig!

My elves don't have pupils. They are inspired by the previous edition images of the solid-black pupilled elves (although I chose white, since black looks satanic). Makes them look a bit more than tall, thin men :)

Eärendil has it right BTW, it's 50 pics - painting 7 of these guys was enough to drive me nuts!!

Very nice, although I find the white dots on the gems a bit big. It would probably look better if they were a bit smaller.

I'm curious, why did you choose white for the eyes, wouldn't another colour look better if you don't paint the pupils? Somthing like green or blue (both can be dark or light).

WOW... about all I can say

And I like the eyes and the different coloured gems - the highlighting on the cloaks gives them some real depth

OK, I'll try this next time. Really I haven't painted so many minis (other than years ago when I played Dwarfs, badly), so each time is a learning experience.

I especially find gems hit-and-miss once they get larger than the size of the gauntlets. (this is a part-way-through shot with only the green gems painted - you can see the gauntlets on the left look good, IMO the swords less so):

I'd like to say there was a better reason, but this is it... When I was painting the first one (mounted Prince), I whited the eyes as normal, left it to dry then while I was waiting, happened to flick onto that page in the old rulebook with all the black-eyed elves. His eyes were white and I thought black would be weird... so I didn't experiment!

(You can see him in my avatar)

Certainly people would ask less if I'd forgotten to dot them in if they were green or blue or something.. but I kind of like it.

Thanks guys, it's good to get praise but also each time I post here, I pick up tips for the next time... that's why I haven't bothered to post 'em anywhere else.

It's either metal LSG (spearmen) or a chariot I think. I need a few days to rest my brain though - you know I painted those golden scales individually (really!) :D

Brilliant, utterly briliant. Your Swordmasters have to be among the best I've seen.

For my best models I always painted the armor scales individually so I can completely understand why you might be feeling tired.

Well done. But, I think there are too many conflicting colors; green, silver, gold, blue, red. The white eyes with no pupils dont work.

On the other hand, the bases are nice and the painting is clean. Blue and gold with a little silver works nice.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.

And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

We'll have to agree to disagree on the eyes, I think. :)

Hmm. I brought in the alternate gem colour to try and add some colour variation to the minis - so that they look more like individuals than zombie clones.

I did my Prince with red gems only (otherwise he was a mix of silver and gold with blue robes, neutral horse) and I thought afterwards that it was a bit bland.

Do you think it makes them too choppy/changey though?

I think I have to agree with Anathir on the gem thing... especially for the SM's who have one color gem for their sword and one color for their guantlet. It gives them that christmas look, but red and green tend to do that.

I do think multiple colored gems can work in some instances, but this doesn't seem to be one of them. Just my two cents.

Other than that they look amazing. I wish my character models had half the detail your SM's do.

Ah man!
These guys are bad-assed.
Nice work.
I love the blue robes with gold scale.
White eyes are a nice touch...matches your avatar.
Do you have more pics of other units?

Only an RBT, prince and mage... if you search my posts in this forum you should find them

Or, I am thinking that I should put an army topic together so they all stay in the same place. Watch this space ;)

Yes, please!
What paints are you using?
Are those Foundation, basic GW or Vallejo?
A detailed color pallette would be appreciated!
I've asked other painters before and was sadly ignored...
I ask so I can experiment and try to improve my techniques.
What size brush do you use primarily?
I have a Standard, Small Dry, Detail and Fine Detail--all GW.

Excellent job! I like the highlights and the level of detail that went into these. What did you use to make the bases? They are very neat
