Isn't he?

The people over at the Underempire have quite a lot of sweet conversions for the monsterous rat - most of them to make it look more...alive - adding flesh and fur. I guess I'll do the same and add some extra bits of my own. I was thinking some packmasters to prod it into battle. Maybe some chains on it, too. We will see.

I should have some more pictures of the BSB, too. Just need to make my Dad upload them, since they're 500km away at the moment

I don't think it needs any improvement
You want to field it as a rat ogre or something different??
and yes, we want more BSB pics :D

Its not that I want it improved, I just want it, you know, pimped  A good opportunity to practice my poor green stuff skills and customise the beast somewhat, too.

I was thinking of fielding it as a rank filler (big clanrat units get boring to look at at some point) - so no special effect really. Unless of course 7th edition finally brings the infamous clan moulder burrowing beast

I've started collecting Skaven in a small way, mainly because I've been buying distressed figures to breakdown for other conversions I'm doing. Though as I've gone along I've found one or twenty models worth keeping and repairing, - so I suppose they'll start becoming a small army one day.

They always do... a small pack is all it takes...

The classic clanrats are nice, but the organised look doesn't work well for Skaven. They are also bigger then most Skaven models, including stormvermin. They do bring back the memories of 5th edition Skaven though. The suggested army at the end of the army book, that included Thanquol and a unit of 40 clanrats

I agree, - teeming & swarming disorder is more a Skaven look. My weakness is buying the older Editions of miniature figures and when I was given the opportunity to buy around 20 plastic Clanrats in well painted condition from an ex-GW employee I couldn't past them up.
Most probably they'll spend their time as an ally regiment with my old Goblins anyway so they won't clash with the new multipart Skaven i'm gradually aquiring.

I can't resist the older Skaven as well, but I try to keep to metal models. Speaking of clanrats - a new plastic set is rumoured to be among the wave of releases to come with the 7th edition AB - no more giant hands! No more impossible-to-rank tails!

Like I said, some more photos - the face is now finished, I've also done parts of the banner pole and painted and attached a double handed sword to the belt:

I'm really happy that people found the topic interesting

Thank you!

Now all I have to do is finish the banner design - I'm really inspired by the ones posted by Si'anelle and I'm reading about the great empires of the near east right now (Persian Fire by Tom Holland at the moment, much recommended ).

I've also added some pictures of my army (the general so far) to my army blog, if you guys are interested, the link is in the first post of the thread.

Oh my!! I love what you've done with your BSB. The colours you've used are just perfect and suit High Elves very well, but at the same time are wonderfully fresh and original.
I can't wait to see your banner :D

Hey!
That conversion is neat as hell!
Thank you so much for the inspiration.
Great idea using the old Morley Silver Helm sculpt for the torso.
Now you've got me thinking.

I love the old silver helms! I bought 10 of them a while back, 6 were made into a normal unit, 1 became the BSB, 3 are still waiting their turn. I'm thinking about converting an elite skirmishing unit out of them - not scouts but a group of hardcore fighters that rather fight as individuals than in formation.

Its a pity GW doesn't keep the metal models as an alternative to plastics, especially if the older sculpts are so clearly superior. In 5th edition you could buy the plastic basic troops if you were just starting or lacked money, but they could be replaced with more detailed metal models later on. I think they could still make money from it. Anyway, for now, god bless ebay!

I've made a sketch of the banner - I guess I won't be changing much - perhaps I'll paint the sun in orange instead of read to make it brighter. The frame will be a patter like that to the side - except the colours will probably be gold and silver.

I've also finished the banner pole, hopefully I'll manage to take photos and post them soon

Yes an orange sun would be better, the red sun in your sketch looks lost in the background. Great design though and I'm looking forward to seeing the final version in the hands of your BSB.

Thanks for the opinion. I didn't manage to actually take pictures of the banner pole, but I scanned them  Its a bit blurry, but you can just about guess what it looks like, so here they are:

<a href="http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m172 ... rpole1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m172 ... rpole1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m172 ... erpol2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m172 ... erpol2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The gems are various shades of hawk turquise, the lion and banner parts are bestial brown/graveyard earth/bleached bone/skull white. Metal bits are burnished gold drybrushed with mithril silver.

I'll post the final pictures as soon as I paint the banner itself and manage to reclaim the camera from my parent (should take a few months :P )

Ah that's the difference with owning a hi-res photgraphic quality scanner instead of a cheapie one. I use mine all the time to take 'photos' of miniatures

The banner pole is looking seriously good btw and the detail work you've put into it is a credit to you.

Is that brown graveyard earth or whatever? I'm liking the color.

Your description of how you can use a scanner to take photos was exactly why I made this attempt  The results are rather disappointing in my case but since the banner is almost flat it will suffice.

You are correct, Arhain, the base is graveyard earth all over the pole but the highlights are different depending on the part - the brightest are bleached bone.

Thanks for the comments guys (guy and gal actually )

Thanks, I think I've improved my gem painting techniques recently - I try to use paints in a more watery consistency so that they blend nicely together. I also try to keep the colours to the tiny strip at the bottom - I believe they look more mysterious when mostly black. The turquise has become my favourite paint for these, although I still sometimes do green ones.

To be honest I think the blurry picture makes the gems look better than in reality. I'm still proud of them but the additional blending is a big improvement

After a long break I've returned to my project. Here are photos of different stages of the banner. I tried to stick to the design posted above, but it turned out rather difficult

So finally, pictures of the completed BSB. I took quite a long time to finish, but I'm really happy with how he turned out. It was also a new experience for me to have a topic like this - I'd like to thank all the people who had a look and left a comment
