Army of Eataine (updated 1/28/2009 - Repeater Bolt Thrower)
Moderators: The Heralds, The Loremasters
Thanks a bunch for the link ctran!, might be able to find some of the legendary models im looking for here! (still none available on Ebay, and i'm paranoid about the bids getting crazy!! due to thier rarity.)
keep up the good work with the Eatainian army (incidentally you might wanna ckeck out my work in progress Eatainian army list ideas thread here:
http://www.ulthuan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26996
maybe you've got some comments or ideas of your own, lemme know when you next have the chance yeah?
Yeah, I always have trouble getting whites to work, I tend to shade white with the subtle addition of a darkened version of the colour im using as the main theme (mostly its just an incredibly light blue-white shade colour, but ive seen green and purple work well too) - If its done subtly enough, and with the right ratio of colour to white, it can work really well, and help add definition to the shadows on white surfaces whilst also supporting the overall colour scheme/theme.
If I get the digital camera i'm hoping for from Father Christmas, ill post up some shots of my old minis on a thread.
Ill keep checking this thread for updates on your exemplar army, whenever i visit, im always amazed at the discipline it must take to do those shields - truly inspirational!

very nice painting indeed:D I just don't know why GW ditched these old lothern seaguard, those models are just beautifull and the same for the silver helms.

Wow those are just amazingly good - the detailing on the shields is unbelievable wish I could paint detail to that degree
As for the Silver Helms I think the colour scheme is great makes them look like an Ancient Greek army which is definately a unique take on things.
Cheers for the step by step painting guide too

Ctran,
Let me begin by saying you so some beautiful work! I've been painting for almost 5 years now and I must say your stuff is excellent!
I've recently begun to create a High Elf army of my own. I plan on painting them to look like Blood Elves because I think that the Elves of Ulthuan are becoming more and more bitter as their pushed closer to extinction.
Tell me, how long have you been painting? All of your metals are NMM correct? And, from the looks of it, you don't use many washes, you blend!
I'm coming from playing daemons for a while as well as painting them. I'm excited to play as High Elves as well as paint them.
Keep it up! Great work!
Jake
P.S.: Here are some of my daemons if you're interested: http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/ ... -gods.html

Hey,
I've been gone for a while! Thanks for all the compliments and sorry for this late reply.
kourosh - Yes, I am going to be painting phoenix guard, eventually Haha, I'm far from the best, but when I get a phoenix guard painted I'll definitely post a picture. It might not be for a while though, sorry.
redarmy27 - Yes, all the metals for my elves are NMM. I wanted them to look fairy-tale fantasy-ish. But I have been playing around with metallic paints and inks for Orcs & Goblins, which I wanted to look more gritty, and I use both NMM and metallics for my Space Marines. (Links to photos of them in my signature.)
I think I've been painting since 2003, although I took 2006-2007 off. If you want your painting to improve I suggest three things:
1. Take it SLOW... I mean unbearably painful slow. I tend to paint characters and special miniatures better than core troops because I am not unconsciously rushing to finish the regiment. I get the best results when I tell myself: today, the only thing I'm going to paint is this figures sword (or shoulder, or head, etc.), nothing else! So I spend 2-4 hours on just a small area instead of an entire mini, which forces me to do my best job rather than an adequate table top job. No easy way around the time commitment.
2. Thin your paints with water. Learn by experience what the right amount of paint & water is for a smooth basecoat, vs say a fine free-hand design. You can practice on paper (I use a plastic grocery bag) to see how thin you can make your lines, and then mentally note how watery the paint had to be.
3. Experiment! If you never do anything new, you never learn new techniques. Look at what other painters have done, whether it be NMM, paint chips from battle damage or reflected lighting and give it a shot. It might look awful the first time but it's a learning experience and you'll eventually get better.
I like your demons redarmy. They're very colorful, and I like the color transitions, which of course suites Tzeentch very well
