Phoenix Guard

#1 Post by TripleDiamonds »

A Quick question I hope someone can answer easily...

If I have a noble BSB and put him in a unit of Phoenix Guard.... Does the noble get the ward save like the unit? If you have an answer for this, could you also let me know what page I can find the rule on for clarification?

He doesn't get the ward save.

Buy him magic items to keep him alive. Helm of Fortune and Guardian Phoenix probably the best. And of course on a horse.

Then the best protection that exists is horse and shield. You must make a trade off and cannot have everything. This isn't the Daemon army book (thank god). :)

Accept with the unit champion.

ok well if he is on foot and carrying a magic banner can he still wear dragon armour?
Is it worth taking dragon armour? Or is dragon armour considered magical armour?

He should not be on foot carrying a magic banner. Any fighting character not wearing Armour of Caledor rides a horse.

EDIT: Maybe you missed this, but riding a horse does not prevent him from joining infantry units. In 7th edition, almost all fighting characters ride horses because the bonus armour save alone is worth the cost of the horse.

Look in the army book. There is nothing anywhere to indicate dragon armour is magical armour. In a general purpose list, the marginal cost of dragon armour is so trivial you should always take it.

Especially if fighting anything reputed to be highly reliant on flaming attacks.

And it upsets dwarves with their flaming cannons. Like they weren't good enough already :P

If you use the Battle banner put him on an Elven Steed, like has been said.

If the PG are about to be charged you have to make the decision as to whether the BSB is likely to be killed. If so, then I would suggest move him to a nearby unit, hope the PG hold the charge and then counter charge with the BSB/Battlebanner.

The BSB should have a lance, his strength 6 hits, on the charge, should clear the way for his battle banner to do the rest. If the enemy has a powerful character in his unit and you haven't got a champ to accept the challenge, then I would seriously consider keeping your expensive BSB out of harms way.

Cheers.
