Holy hell High Elves

#1 Post by HERO »

Just checking in.. you know.. because I used to play a crap ton of WHFB in 6-8th with High Elves and hung around here.

A lot has changed since then:
> 8th Ed died out, AoS came and went, and now AoS is on the rise again after they brought back points.
> I actually sold off all my High Elves.. which is really freaking sad but I couldn't justify letting them sit there gathering dust any more.
> In fact, I sold off most of my 40K and WHFB armies and pretty much went all-in on FFG X-Wing and Armada.
> I actually found Tethlis hanging out on the Infinity forums lol, what the hell are the chances of that?
> I played a bit of 9th Age and AoS using friends models but it just wasn't the same really. I might still be tempted into AoS sometime..
> 8th Ed. 40K just came out and it's alright. I'm waiting for them to release the Aeldari codex before I go too hard.

So Total War: Warhammer II is coming out next month and our all-time favorite faction is going to be in it. Of course, I'm going to end up playing High Elves a crap ton, but I'm primarily a MP player so that's where I'll be hanging out.

Just wanted to stop by and say Hi, and know that I'll be repping the boys in blue once TWW2 drops. You can find me on twitch.tv/LKHERO. You know who I'll be trying first? Teclis. And he has a horse now, who knew that dude could ride a horse?

Its been quite a ride, true!

Great to hear from you, have fun with TW - I've no time for video games these days, but its one I'd love to give a go. Heard Battlefleet Gothic is coming out - that might be something for you, given the history with xwing?
cheers, Lee

As in, BFG for Table-top again? If so, I'd love to play it. Maybe they'll do EPIC 40K too?! That would be grand. I played Eldar in both.. shocking, I know.

I played the hell out of BFG: Armada on the computer and it was an alright game, awful developers but solid game none the less.

Norsca just got released today along with 30 regiments of renown for TWW, man.. Norsca is so good right now!

I'm looking forward to TWW2 as well. It looks pretty good. Though actual gameplay of TW games varies a bit. But most reviews of TWW were positive. And I think the game hasn't changed much. Except for the different campaign objectives. Which should be interesting enough.

Let us know of any reports you make on it. I'd love to see more of it.

Welcome back, it's always nice to see old faces stop by :) . TWW 2 looks like it'll be a fun game, maybe we can set up some forum games? I'll wait for the first sale though, I have Horizon Zero Dawn and painting to keep me occupied for now, but after?

So what do you guys think of the High Elves roster for TWW2?
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/high-elf-army-roster/

They have main infantry units in there like SM, WL and PG, but we're also missing some cool new editions, with Sisters being the big missing.

What? No flying boat and bird to pull it? Awful.

Actually I don't miss anything that isn't there.

It is severely lacking: No griffon, no Eltharion the Grim as a legendary lord, no White Lion Chariots or cavalry, no Maiden Guard or Sisters of Avelorn. I'll be holding My purchase until Radious mods it

Since each faction only gets 2 legendary lords, it's not very surprising that we get Tyrion and Teclis (I didn't expect anything else). I like it. Yes, there are a few things missing. But the mainstay of the army is there. All the iconic elven units are there. It should feel like an elven force. So I'm hopeful. :) Should be fun at least.

The one surprising missing unit perhaps is the griffon. But that's mainly because it was included in the IOB set. And as such a lot of people will have one lying around. Though differentiating it from other units perhaps turned out difficult.

Hello, an old face back to see what is going on?

I wanted to do a post, and like ages past @Hero did a great job summerising this. What is happing now? Are people playing AoS with points? It played one game last year at the GW store and the manager let me win. Haha.

I'm also looking at TW2!

I suspect they are but as an 8th edition diehard I’m losing touch with the systems I don’t play. 9th Age remains pretty popular as far as I can tell.

The scene split into 4 groups more or less. Not equal groups by the way, also dependent on country etc.

The groups are:
- AoS
- Stayed with 8th edition
- Moved to 9th edition
- Moved to other game, mainly Kings of War
To give you a bit of an idea about the different groups:
I think a big part of the internet ETC crowd moved to 9th edition. They have an active forum and online community and they are largely moved forward by the people who were / are active ETC players and organisers.

8th edition (like SA I'm a fan) players I think are less competitive in their gaming and more play with friends and as a consequence are less active online.

Kings of war got big in several countries. And I think it's slowly picking up steam. From what I've heard it's pretty big in Australia and Norway for instance. But in other countries it's relatively small

AoS seems to be doing Ok, though I have no figures to back that up. Some forums have relatively active AoS communities. And I think GW is still making new models and rules for it, which is a good sign of course.

Thanks @Prince of Spires. It looks to be more fragmented than before. This is not good.

At least the last time in 8th ed we were complaining about the rules, but at least we were all playing the same game.

It's becoming more about collecting miniatures than playing a game. And with no real army list for AoS there is no reason for me to come back.

I've gone back to playing Magic the Gathering. Holy hell, I quit magic 18 years ago to play Warhammer...

I think the dust is still settling on the community. If it recovers then I suspect one of the systems will gain dominance over the others. The game is such that it has a strong network effect. You play the game because your friends play it. You start the game because you come into contact with it. Either via a friend who plays or a local shop or community.

And, as with all network effect related things, the winner usually keeps on winning. Until they decide to blow up the network that is...
