The Stronghold - AoS Destruction Grand Alliance Website

#1 Post by hragged »

Hi folks, I'd just like to share news that the venerable Stronghold recently relaunched as a website for all factions of Destruction in Age of Sigmar - so if you're a fan of Orruks, Grots, Ogors, Gargants, Toggoths or even the mysterious Fimir please come take a look! :)

The Stronghold: http://www.the-stronghold.com

Some features of the new site:

- Modern community software with dedicated blogging system
- Gallery of Destruction showcasing 100 fully painted armies and over 2000 images
- Warscrolls index listing all Destruction warscrolls with the ability to rate and review them
- Tribes database sharing info about members' tribes with game result tracking
- Base size guide providing the recommended round or oval base sizes for your Destruction minis
- Video playlists of the greatest Destruction videos on YouTube, Stronghold videos on the way too
- Podcasts summary of all Destruction-focused episodes across a variety of popular shows
- Twitter feed actively highlighting the best Destruction tweets on Twitter daily
- Newsletter covering the latest goings on in the Destruction community
- Monthly competitions starting this month
- and more!

Hope you like what you see at the Stronghold, leave the boring life of Order behind and join the growing forces of rampaging Destruction!

Thanks :D
Gareth

Wow - big move! Guess they're getting behind the GW AoS programme then.

Does this mean as an army-specific website they won't be supporting T9A, KoW, 8th Ed etc?

Also, what does this mean for the other 'forces of destruction'? Did they formerly have their own army-specific websites? Are they folding? Merging with strongholds? Re-focussing onto non-GW enterprises?

Still room for all of those games really, and any other games too (just as before!). All the old WFB posts from the past decade are still there as well, and the WFB section remains open to oldhammer and T9A posts :)

As for me, I was unsure about AoS early on and I had attempted to actively support and play all systems for almost a year, but in the end I felt I was spreading myself too thin and the site was losing focus and relevance too. It's difficult to get interest and activity going for all games when I have limited free time, and I was left wondering if it was even a smart use of my time when the 8th community is dwindling, T9A community appears to have largely flocked to T9A forum which makes sense as that's where the game is being built (rules writing/balancing isn't what inspires me but I look forward to seeing the game grow however!), and the online KoW Ogre community seems quite small indeed (had only a handful of KoW topics posted in a year).

With the release of the General's handbook and the numerous Destruction battletomes, I'm well into AoS now - that's primarily where the future of the hobby lies for me. I'm excited and feel inspired again, and I think the Stronghold can offer more to Destruction fans. Since switching focus to AoS I'm pleased to say the Stronghold is growing once more, new users are registering regularly which is great to see, and the Stronghold Twitter page and Facebook group are also going strong! :)

I had gotten in touch with Da Warpath's admin about working together on it, but they're more into social media sites these days though wished me the best with it :) As far as I know that was the only other big forum falling under the Destruction Grand Alliance, so I just decided to put the work in myself! :D

Anways, thanks for taking a look!

Fair play to you - I'm glad you've found a system to focus on, both for yourself and for your forum. (Also quietly pleased there's a place for T9A there, even if the T9A forum does seem to be sucking most players there...) :).

Yeah if 9th Age continues to flourish and gather increased support it would be great to see it get more active at the 'hold too :)

Reached a little milestone at the site today BTW, 100 painted armies now in the gallery:

These are the kind of places I thought AoS was at. As a 'traditional' forum are you the first to embrace AoS fully or are there others?

I think the Stronghold is the only veteran forum to switch so far, but 'The Grand Alliance' was also set up recently as a brand new general AoS forum by Ben Curry of Bad Dice fame.

Social media sites have taken a lot of attention away from forums in recent years though (Twitter and Facebook groups especially), but I've jumped in on those too - so you could say the Stronghold is really multiple communities on different sites now with the main site acting as a hub bringing it all together.

I've just launched a new competition today BTW details here: http://www.the-stronghold.com/index.php ... line-unit/

That's what I suspected.

I get what you're saying here, I'm not on it but Twitter always seemed to be the best place to follow the ETC for example. Obviously though, the advent of AoS has been a real challenge to traditional forums, most becoming less active as the Warhammer community fragments.

Yes, but the decline was already happening before AoS. None of the forums were as active in 2013 as they were in 2003. Personally I like it a lot better than twitter or facebook because it's easier to follow a conversation. But I'm old.

Fair point. I read some of the forums around 2003 but probably not as closely as you did Shannar. TBH things were pretty busy here until 2013, there was a definite dip then, despite a temporary spike from the HE book release. I'm not sure End Times helped that much either.

This nails it for several of us I think. But most guys use social media. Hragged seems to have a good approach.

I've never 'got' twitter. Don't have an account and don't see the point, although maybe I would if I did, so it's a circular argument.

I do use facebook, and while I don't use it for following warhammer, both my previous and current clubs now organise primarily on facebook, as does my board gaming club, so I do my 'admin' on facebook but not my online socialising.

Like Shannar, I like the format of forums for the types of discussion they're suited to, but I can appreciate potentially the need for them to evolve as Stronghold has to cope with the new gaming environment.
