A Just Cause

#1 Post by Facade19 »

Jubilation flared outside, as the armies of the republic marched forward to assist their tiny nation state ally in a war of noble aggression against the wild, bestial like minded barbarians that once, at least several millenniums ago, attempted to subjugate the noble people to butchery and slavery. Like their ancestral forbearers, with whom our noble people have the spirit of freedom in common, the brave and mighty armies of our republic set forth to aid our noble ally in its need for a defensive war of aggression.

As the army marched forth, to meet the presumptive counter-strike by the savage barbarians who were struck by our just allies in the middle of the night, while the whole world was asleep and sunder, all entered the streets and waived their flags and shouted for a swift victory over the unjust savages who dared to muster their forces to sweep up our noble and just ally.

Yet, not all were so quick to show their true patriotic spirit, as some refused to congregate and as these madmen and madwomen dared to declare "Join in union in such unprovoked and wicked acts."

Foolishly, they instead boasted loudly that a war of noble and just defense is unjust and betrays the stay of liberty upon which our republic was founded on. These madmen and madwomen, sophists in their own ways, procured nothing but wickedness in their boastful declarations. Are they not afterall, those, who without the noble and just protection of our brave armies are entitled to live a life of peace and comfort, who without the shelter of our peaceful republic could raise the banners of sordidness and question our motives? No, madmen and madwomen can never be trusted.

Lucious Vagranius, the lictor remaining to supervise the mobilizations of the remaining conscripts heard the announcer utter these words, while the city militia was gathering the unpatriotic scum and moving them to secluded areas, where they were unable to produce falsehoods.

As Vargranius was collecting his personal belongings and moving about to collect his thoughts, Maximus Clandastinus, the wise approached him to congratulate him on this great and promising opportunity to make a name for himself. As Maximus walked towards him, and express his hopes, Thannatos, the crazy and blind old man, whom some considered to be stricken with madness, moved towards Vargranius position. While Maximus was speaking and informing Vargranius of his sincere hope that this affair with the savages would end quickly, Thannatos, after having heard those words erupted in abrasive laughter and in uncontrollable fashion jested about his spot, clapping his hands and moving about like a wild beast.

"Hear, oh hear, the wise Maximus has spoken. War is evil so he says, and shameful, yet he wastes no time putting on his finest garment and purist perfume, while approaching a soldier, who is about to go and make a poor woman a widow, and a child fatherless. What does this Maximus know, especially of war. Dare I say nothing? For what do old men know, who never have left the comfort of their nice homes, the senate, which filled their coffers with luxuries beyond their wildest imagination, know of war?

Hear, oh hear, war is not evil. Nay, war is not unjust. War is necessary, war is needed. While we shun the idea of death, we celebrate the making of death. Nay, war is needed to remind man of his mortality and bring him back to the ground. Without it, without its powerful effects, life would be too stagnant and pointless, all meaning gone and wasted. War brings forth slaughter and death, but yet brings also forth life. It enriches the souls of men, it resuscitates man's spirit for life. For far too long have we been entertained with pointless and meaningless trifles, become satisfied with the bones of mindless entertainment. Nay, war brings back the seriousness of life and educates man of the hierarchy of life. War is necessary, for it teaches us that some must be and many must not be. War, hear of hear, resurrects the spirit of man.

"Must a blind man and madman be allowed to speak so harshly about our beloved Clandastinus? Seize and arrest this madman, along with others, for he is soiling the good and noble name of our beloved elder and statesman."

As Vargranius looked around to determine who ushered the arrest order, Thannatos was already by then seized and taken away. Not much of a thinker and not caring too much about idle activities, Vargranius nonetheless rejected Thannatos disposition. It was true, he knew not much of war and knew too much of death. But, he felt that the republic's future was at stake and to secure the survival of his nation, he needed to participate in this war. He wanted to ensure that the republic's peaceful reach could not be disturbed by savages that dared to rise up against a little, tiny nation.

And so, he marched off to war.
