Zhuàng's eyebrows rose. "The Avatar? Shouldn't we be looking for the kidnapped children?"

"I think the reasoning is that the Avatar, as bridge between mortal and spirit, should be told of this," Vaan guessed. He glanced over at the Fire Sage. "Am I correct?"

"Correct young one. When Lei Shen struck here we let the Avatar know of this." A small look of concern crossed his face. "We do not know if it has been received yet though as no word has come back to us or the Palace. Still," he brightened a touch, "this will be good news to pass on to find meaning behind it all."

"Surely a message can be sent to the Avatar without the three of us seeing him personally," Vaan said. "We are... following a different path to learning about the cause behind these attacks, and how to prevent them from continuing." He would certainly like to speak with Avatar Aang, he reflected, but he had to follow Yue's prompting.

"Very good, I shall inform him of this new information." With pen in hand he quickly wrote a fluid letter, then stopped. "It does raise worries about just what was taken. The Elder Sages shall need to be informed also, see if there is any information like this in the catacombs."

A small fan fluttered over the drying ink, before a seal was applied to the scroll. With a hand signal, he motioned to be followed. Around the pagoda you went, climbing levels untill you reached the very top. In the centre of the room a firepit lay blazing, five white beared Sages sat in contemplative silence. Around the ceiling a stone Dragon coiled. A young monk struck a small gong as the group entered, the Sage you spoke to making forms of suplication to the Elders. "I bring people who have new information on the act of Lei Shen." Their gaze turning upon the strangers with keen interest.

Deciding to speak up if neither of the others would, Vaan bowed to the Fire Sage and quickly explained, shortly and succintly, what had brought them down to seek further knowledge. "Do you know of anything that might help shed light on these events, with what we have said?" he asked.

Silently the group of Elders listened. Once Vaan had finished, the five turned to each other in contemplation. At last the Eldest spoke. "This is most enlightening, I wonder if it is a consequence of the Pact with Enma?"

"Pact?" Vaan had never heard of any pact. "Could you, perhaps, enlighten us on what pact you are speaking of?"

As you sat, the fire before you flickered and lept into the air. As the Elder talked, it almost seemed like images filled the flames.
"Yes, Avatar Aang traveled to the Spirit World and thus found Enma, Guardian of the Dead. Thus they spoke long upon the trouble to come should no more Air Nomads be born, his reasonings falling upon deaf ears. Then without warning, Koh come among them with unexpected words. He agreed with Aang that the cycle should not be broken and that those who had passed on should be allowed rebirth among the other nations. Greatly did Avatar Aang struggle against showing surprise in the face of Koh. " The images begin to fad, leaving only flames in your vision. "Thus the pact was sealed and the Air Nomads brought to us once more."

"And what is a 'Koh'?" Jia Lin asked. She had been sitting quietly for some time, filing away the information in her mind, but much which touched upon the spirit world was beyond her knowledge.
"Ask every person if they've heard the story,
And tell them, loud and clear, if they have not:
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called Camelot.

Don't let it be forgot
That once there was a spot
For one brief shining moment
That was known as Camelot."

Lightly, he shrugged. "On this the Avatar would not speak." He shakes his head slowly. "Whatever it was, we can only hope it was not a high price. "Though with the machinations of Koh the Face Stealer involved, it may be to protect us." He turned his golden eyes upon Jia Lin. "He is an ancient spirit, wily, malevolent." His expression stoic, then chuckles briefly at Zhuang's comment. "Not all firebending is about destruction," a flicker of solemnity crosses his aged face.

"So the pact has been - according to at least one spirit - broken, children, and important children at that, have all been taken, another spirit asks that they be found, and in the middle of all this is Koh the Face Stealer." Vaan rubbed his temples, trying to think. "Complicated. And the Avatar has still said nothing of the pact? Nobody has been able to discover anything about it since it was made?" He paused, considering. "How would you advise going about discovering the nature of the pact? Could it be done?" Vaan himself certainly knew nothing, or at least could not think of anything that might be important beyond what he had learned in the past few days.

What do I roll to see if Vaan knows anything about Koh?

"Perhaps, though the pact was sealed decades ago now. To suddenly find fault with it now? Even within the timelessness of the Spirit World?" He shook his head once more. "He was not forward about it and we dare not pry. He alone among mortal man could say, unless you find a Spirit friendly to humanity still."

Vaan didn't know much of Koh, just that he was an ancient and powerful - and malevolent - spirit who stole faces by some means. There had to be a catch to involvement by that one, but he couldn't see it. He considered telling the Sages about his contact with the Moon Spirit. Perhaps it would help. "The Moon Spirit would be one spirit friendly to this world, no?" he finally asked. "There was... a dream, that I had. A rush of images. I think that they can be trusted."

Vaan nodded, slightly disappointed. He had hoped that the scholars would be able to help him decipher some of the meaning, but it seemed that was not to be the case. "Would you," he asked, "at least be able to work out possible places to start in following some sort of route to finding the locations of the images? Where to go next, if a messenger can be sent to the Avatar while we search for the stolen children?"

Vaan disguised a frown. Hadn't they mentioned the children? "We are trying to find the stolen grandson of the chief of my tribe," he said, "among other nobles that were for some reason kidnapped. Do you think there is a connection between it and the odd behaviour of some of the spirits?"

The Elder looked aghast. "I had heard rumour of the Crown Princes child with all the current military activity, but that others have been taken as well?" They all shock their heads in sadness. Another spoke up, "I would not think so. As you say, something was taken from the Spirits, where this kidnapping is from the various nations leading families."

Zhuàng listened to the conversation half-heartedly, there wasn't much he could add to it and he knew that. Instead, he spent the time admiring the architecture and art of the temple interior. When it became apparent that the fire sages couldn't help them with their quest, he thought to himself "So all we gained from missing lunch was that a spirit named Koh was involved and that the Avatar did a deal with the spirits in order for the Air Nomads to be reborn. This doesn't bring us any closer to finding the children"
