Sheppard looked perplexed. What was this man doing, one minute proclaiming himself as the devil, a being of christianity, and the next trembling in fear as if he had no control over himself?

"You desrve no mercy Sir Morien. You have murdered three wives already and they deserve justice and I intend to hand it out. Rosyland avert your eyes." Owen advances on Morien steadily intent on finishing him off.

OOC: Apparently I do need to kill off everyone

"You'll never best me, knights!" the nearly hysterical peasant said... but as he spoke, Sir Alain and Sir Sheppard noticed a curious thing - when the Devil spoke, Old Gorwel's mouth was not moving, as it was when he was speaking to protest his innocence.

-------------

Sir Owen strode towards Sir Morien purposefully. The pagan saw death in the Kingslayer's eyes and raised his sword to vainly attempt to defend himself... a second later, the knight's corpse fell to the ground, blood streaming across the rugs on the floor, and Sir Owen pulled his blade free from the man's body.

Owen wiped his blade as clean as he could and turned to face Rosyland. "I'm sorry you had to see that Rosyland. But he can't hurt you any longer. Lets get out of here." he says extending his hand towards her.

Alain scoffed, "I've already bested you trickster, your meager tricks have yet to convince or fool me. Surely, this is why you spend your time tormenting half-wits, for who else could you possibly hope to match yourself evenly with? I dare hope this is not the best you could offer or a skill you pride yourself, a child caught raiding the larder is more convincing!"

The next morning, when the tides uncovered the causeway from the castle once more, Sir Perin (who had returned to his bed in the guard tower) was astounded to see Sir Owen, alive if only barely so, and Lady Rosalynd cross the causeway. The Lady seemed distracted: she barely spoke a word at all.

Owen turned to the Lady. "Are you okay Rosalynd? I know that you have been through dark times here but now you finally have a chance to start anew. Will you stay here or do you have some other place youd like to go to?" asks Owen concerned.

There is someone nearby thought Sheppard. Someone skilled at throwing their voice and sowing discontent among the populous. The pieces were finally coming together, at last he would have the scum who caused all this trouble and finally show the peasants there were no devils among them.

Perin was overjoyed at the sight of his friend and waved once before sprinting towards him. "My friend, I am beside myself with relief! After the boat turned over and I spent the night looking for you without a trace, I feared the worst! And Lady Rosalynd, this is a joyous morning indeed, with such beauty to rival the rays of the sun to greet me" the young knight said and bowed gracefully. Noticing the distraught look on the woman's face and the somewhat grim visage on his friend's, his expression grew worried "Is something the matter?"

ooc: So, if you haven't noticed, I've been barely posting lately. Work is hectic, and I just don't have the energy to do this as well right now. But I don't want to just call it off altogether, so here's the plan: I'm calling a hiatus until the school holidays. In just under three weeks, I'll have a break, and I'll start posting again then. However, until then, I just have too much stuff to deal with and can't really handle running an rpg as well.

See you all in three weeks!

ooc: And three weeks later, I'm finally going to start this up again! I'm not sure that I'm free enough, but I have internet set up, I've unpacked RPG books and sheets... and if I don't restart this now, then I'll never restart it!

Lady Rosalynd seemed like one in a daze. She responded to questions directly asked, but otherwise the experiences of that night weighed heavily upon her. There was none that she could rely upon, either, with her husband dead. Sir Perin and Sir Owen were conscious as well that the trail to the magician Merlin had gone cold here. There was naught to do but to return to Salisbury with the Lady.

In Salisbury, Sir Cynric composed himself with dignity throughout his stay there. Sir Eleanor and Sir Galan watched him carefully, but he did not react to provocation - and provocation there certainly was! The Saxon was no martyr, however, and after he took some of the servants who had been mistreating him outside and thoroughly thrashed them, the others left him alone somewhat. In the meantime, the weather was fine, and so the knight suggested one day to his minders that the three of them seek sport outside Sarum's walls. "Let us see what sport we can find by hawk or by dog," Cynric said. "In truth I grow weary of being made sport of, and the next who tries may find himself eating his teeth."

Sir Sheppard and Sir Alain heard teeth grinding in rage as they taunted their unseen foe, and in a cloud of black smoke and fire, an immense demonic form appeared before them, wreathed in fire and shadow. "You think to mock me?!" the demon roared, magma hanging like saliva from its toothy maw. "I shall feast on your souls and suck the marrow from your bones and use your intestines for sausages!" A taloned hand reached for the two knights, who found themselves terrified by the apparition.

ooc: Both failed your Valorous rolls. Pity! At least neither of your critically failed.

He couldn't help it, the Pict had to give a wry smile at Cynric's comment. "Aye lad, you've earned your respect. Actions speak louder then words." He set about organising a day ahead. He also set about organising a party far to large for their needs, just in case.

The poor knight felt pity for Rosyland who seemed to be suffering from shock. But it was to be expected for ordeals such as the one she had been through with Morien ussually left scars on the mind, something Owen knew better than most. He did take some solace in the knowledge that at least now she had a chance to move on with her life and that he had been the one to give her this new oppurtunity.

"My Lady I give you my word that you will find safety and welcome in Salisbury. I promise that you will come to no harm and should you have need of a place to stay then you are welcome to stay at my estate." promises Owen confidently, for he knew no one in Salisbury would harm Rosyland once it became known that she was under the protection of the deadly "Kingkiller".

"impossible, such things do not exist, these are but cheap tricks..." Sheppard tried to sound like the brave knight he knew he was, but the way he spoke was not so. He was unable to even lift his sword. Saxons he could fight, they bled like any other man. But this? This thing was no Saxon.

The demon bellowed again, a deep ululating cry that struck terror into the hearts of the two knights. Sir Sheppard fell to his knees, clutching his head, and whimpered, while Sir Alain and the peasants took off like rabbits, screaming in abject terror, and leaving Sir Sheppard alone. It was impossible that such a thing could exist! Impossible! The demon advanced and raised a claw, and the formerly brave knight did his best to meet it in the eye. It was not real! Not real! Not real! He kept repeating this to himself, paralysed with fear like a deer seeing a stalking lion. The demon raised its talons to strike, and it was all the terrified knight could do to stand his ground...

"Oh pooh!" it said, in a decidedly undemonlike voice, and vanished, leaving Sir Sheppard alone.

Sheppard, still on the ground stared into the empty space the demon had once occupied. He could not believe what he had just witnessed, how close he just come to death. Shaken he stood up, and cast his gaze about, searching for the creature he was sure would fell him at any moment. He slowy raised his blade, unsteady as it was.

"Come then beast!" His voice still trembling in the darkness as he tried to fill himself with the courage to fight such a thing. "If I am to meet my end, I shall do so with my sword in my hand!" He would not die on his knees, he would die fighting as his ancestors of the VIIth did!

ooc: Just be glad you didn't run screaming like Sir Alain (crit failed the second courage test, now probably curled up under his bed sobbing incoherently) and were able to show the demon to be a fraud.

There was no reply to Sir Sheppard's challenge. The sun gradually sank in the sky, but the apparition - whatever it had been - seemed to have vanished.

Sir Eleanor found very little amusement from the treatment of Sir Cynric by the servants of Salisbury, and when she heard of the sound thrashing she did not disapprove, though by that same token she did not approve. Eager for a break from the tense atmosphere of the household, and also keen for an opportunity to school her increasingly wayward and flirtatious squire in sports more worthy of a serious knight, she leapt upon the suggestion quickly. "Very good, sir," she agreed, and tried her best to help Sir Galan organise the party.

Sheppard decided to head back to the village in search of his companions. With the sun going down, and still unsure as to what had happened, or what might still happen, he kept his sword at the ready. He was sure of one thing though, what ever that creature may have been, it was no demon, it was impossible that such things could exist, and the sudden change in the creatures voice and manner before it had disapeared only made it more certain in his mind. There was a trickster among them, and when he found him, Sheppard would make sure he would pay for this outrage.

When he finally returned, his strength and conviction had returned with him. He quickly saught out Sir Alain, who he shot a look of disapproval at for leaving him behind to face that terror alone, but relayed what he had found out.
"I would like to search the area where I valiantly held the beast at bay when the sun permits us, and would also like to gather those here at the estate to tell them of my fierce battle with the charlaton, and not to fear this trickery of the mind! We shall expose this cruel trick for what it is. Without fear, the peasentry will rally to us, and way may all hunt down this trickster and cut him down where he stands!"

Owen turned towards Perin and began relaying the previous night's events to his companion. He told Perin everything: about his trip through the sea cave which had nearly cost him his life, his fight with the guards, his nearly lethal leap to Rosyland's window and of course his slaying of the murderous Sir Morien.

"Morien was a wicked man Perin. He butchered his last 3 wives and beat Rosyland and planned on murdering her as well. He deserved his fate but I fear it has left Rosyland in shock. Now she has no where to go but to return to Salisbury with us. I will take responsibility for her upon our return." says Owen wearily, tired from the wounds and battles of the previous night. Still part of him felt good that he had managed to save Rosyland's life.

Perin listened to the recounting in utter disbelief, shaking his head when Owen finished talking. "I had no idea, I swear to all the gods I didn't. He seemed like such a good man, a paragon of my faith. But it seems evil is not so readily apparent as we would wish. Lady Rosalynd, I offer my most sincere condolences and swear on my honor and my life that had I known of this, I would have removed Sir Morien's wicked head from his torso and carved out his twisted heart myself!" he exclaimed in righteous fury. Then a thought passed his mind "While this is a most sorrowful issue and one of great shame for all knights of Cymric blood, I can't shake the memory of another event last night" he turned to Lady Rosalynd "Milady, I apologise for asking, but my curiosity slays my manners. Do you know anything of ghosts in or around the castle? Last night I could swear I witnessed the dreadful sight of two souls left to wander our world, forsaken by Morrigan, a sight most frightful to even the staunchest of hearts"

Lady Rosalynd's face grew more woeful as Sir Perin denigrated her dead husband further. A wretch he may have been, but she still loved him and had never wished for his death.

"Ghosts? I know naught of any ghosts..." Lady Rosalynd said softly, her eyes wide.

***

Sir Galan and Sir Eleanor were hard at work organising a hawking expedition for Sir Cynric. While Sir Galan had initially planned the hunt should take place the very next day, business interfered, as it had its way of doing. Lady Ellen required the services of Sir Eleanor's fashion skills to talk to some burghers, Sir Galan was requested to help deal in his own inimitable manner with drunkards who were causing a ruckus in a tavern, and then the weather went foul, as it was wont to do.

The day before the hawking was finally scheduled to take place, Sir Cynric came to see Lady Ellen as she held session in court, passing judgement upon those disputes too serious for her subjects to settle themselves. Sir Eleanor stood at her side, resplendent in her blue and gold livery. "Countess," the Saxon prince said, "I would that I not have to ask this of my host, but I request leave to duel one of your knights. Sir Joscelin has made slanderous comments regarding my father King Cerdic and my grandfather King Vortigern before many witnesses, and sought to goad me into a fight. Mindful of my place as guest I have demurred, but now before many men he has accused me of hiding behind your protection and being too unmanly to defend myself as a knight should. Lest I be shamed completely, I request redress upon the field against Sir Joscelin."

The Countess looked steadily at the prince. "It would not be seemly should you be injured or slain, and I can ill afford Sir Joscelin to suffer either, loudmouth though he may be. Any negotiations which Sir John conducts now with your father would be destroyed ere they commenced. However, I know a knight's honour is important, and would fain grant this to you."

She turned to look at Sir Eleanor at her side, and dropped her voice. "Sir Eleanor, you have had to defend your honour similarly, and I trust your judgement. I would hear what your opinion is in this matter before I pass judgement."

After several days on the road, Sir John finally arrived in Winchester. He and his party had passed refugees upon the road, and seen sign of the damage which King Vortigern's army had inflicted upon Hampshire. The city in particular seemed much damaged, with parts of the walls fallen from the long siege it had endured. Saxon men-at-arms, many armoured in the fashion of the Cymric people, were working amongst them at rebuilding. There was a strong military presence in the city, Sir John noted. Parades of soldiers patrolled the streets regularly, and the citizenry looked subdued in manner, afraid and resentful of their new overlords. However, his experienced eye noticed that while the walls were damaged, the inside of the city was virtually unscathed from the fighting. Unlike other Saxons, King Cerdic came not as a pillager but a conqueror. Sir John also spotted a strange banner fluttering in the wind as the procession reached the grand hall, where once the Duke had entertained him. Three Saxon soldiers swayed gently in the breeze and the ropes around their necks creaked softly. Their eyes were gone - repast for crows.

"King Cerdic is not as the other Saxons," a heavily bearded man said, seeing Sir John looking at the hanged men. "These three celebrated the conquest by dishonouring a Cymric woman. The King will not tolerate such offenses against his subjects."
"Ask every person if they've heard the story,
And tell them, loud and clear, if they have not:
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called Camelot.

Don't let it be forgot
That once there was a spot
For one brief shining moment
That was known as Camelot."
