Tinian paused at the entrance to the hall and bowed stiffly, his hate warring with diplomacy inside. But they had a real chance to be left alone, he knew and he stopped up any words except these. "Your message will be delivered."

John bowed and breathed a sigh as they left the hall. For a second he had thought they would be drawn into a fight.

'I don't think Earl Roderick will be pleased with this turn of events,' he said.

Gaius looked at the others and said in a hushed tone.
"We ought to ride back to Salisbury as fast as we can. Not too fast to give impression of fear, but neither should we linger too long. Inside we enjoyed the protection of guest-hospitality. Outside we do not. Some of the Silchester knights might fall victim to their pride or hatreds and will try to kill us to satisfy their egos. We should be on guard when we ride home"

Aldrydd nodded his agreement at Gauis's words. "Gauis is right I doubht that all of the Steward's court will want us to return to Salisbury unmlested."

"Sir Rhisiart has just lost six knights," whispered Tinian back. "Your caution is sound, but I think he will control his knights for now." He pulled Bellerophon's head around all the same and headed up the road to Salisbury at a moderate canter.

As the knights hurried to the stable to retrieve their squires and horses, Sir Gaius suddenly saw something which gave him pause. The saddles for the horses were hung on the wall, and there was something strange about one of them...

Sir Gaius had a horrible feeling when he realised that the decoration on the elaborately patterned saddle were not of a Cymric design...

Gaius concealed his expression after the first shock and told Tinian in a low voice.
"You see the saddle on the wall, next to the blue-red one, no don't point at it. That's a Saxon saddle. Memorize the pattern. The Earl must be told there are Saxons here in Levcomagus. We should tell the others when are out of Levcomagus."

Tinian swore, loudly and imprudently, at Gaius' whispering, causing some heads to whip around. Composing himself, he continued to ready his horse. After the looks drifted back away from them he whispered back, "This is news for Earl Roderick, it would be suicide to confront the bastard now."

Sir Tinian noticed one of the squires in the stable start at his oath... and then look directly at the saddle, and hurry from the stables. The Steward would shortly discover that they knew about the saddle.

Aldrydd was confused at Gauis's and Tinian's strange behaviour. "What are you talking about Tinian?" Despite his confusion Adrydd mounted his horse swiftly and began to ride.

Gaius did likewise and rode out on Bucephalus as fast he could, behind Tinian. He cursed at himself for forgetting that Tinian was the impetous among them.

A group of knights on foot charged out from the Great Hall, waving their swords, in an attempt to cut off the Salisbury knights. However, as the chargers galloped at them, they dove out of the way to avoid being trampled. Over their shoulders, the knights can see them run for the stables.

Levcomagus was in an uproar as the knights burst through the streets, heading for the gate as quickly as they could. Citizens and animals dove out of the way in a panic. Behind them, the knights could hear more horses, and shouts from their pursuers. "Stop them!"

Ahead of them loomed the main gates of the town. Seeing the pursuit, the gate guards hurriedly began moving to close the gates and block off their escape, but they moved too slowly: the knights tear passed them, and so they scramble aside as the knights of Levcomagus follow, close behind them.

Once out of the city, the knights could risk casting their eyes behind them. Eight knights of Levcomagus were closely in pursuit, kicking their horses to make them move as swiftly as they could.

Gaius shouted to the others:
"Lets ride a bit to put distance between us and them. If we have to fight them it should be away from reinforcements!! And we ride because Saxons are guests at Levcomagus!!!" putting extra weight on Saxons to indicate that Levcomagus most likely had allied with the hated people from across the seas.

"Alain!! You have always been the best among us when riding a horse. No matter what happens, ride to Sarum and inform the Earl there are Saxons in Levcomagus staying as guests. Consider this repayment for Imber!!" Gaius said with a strong voice while he prepared for battle, in case they could not outrun the Steward's knights, and said a prayer. Only one year a Knight it seems. At least my death will not be entirely in vain he thought grimly to himself.

Alain continued to head along the road with reckless haste, while the others turned into the woods. Galloping into a forest was an extremely foolhardy idea: there were so many obstacles that a rider could easily be thrown. Worse still would be if a charger broke its leg: it would have to be put down. However, the pursuers would face the same perils, and it would be easier to hide from them in the forest. Two of the knights continued after Alain; the other six followed into the forest.

Sir Tinian and Sir Gaius managed to negotiate the obstacles successfully. However, Sir Aldrydd and Sir John were not so lucky. Sir John was caught by a low-lying tree-branch and whisked off his saddle, while Sir Aldrydd's horse tripped: the knight fell to the forest floor, and then the horse fell on to him. It stood up and continued to run, while Aldrydd picked himself up. Behind them, they could hear a horrible equine scream, which cut off suddenly: one of the Silchester knights had broken his horse's leg, and the agonized animal had had to be slaughtered. Soon, however, the other four knights appeared on horseback. Two of them continued after Sir Gaius and Sir Tinian, while the other two stopped and levelled their spears at the two knights on foot. "Surrender!" their leader shouted.

Aldrydd picked himself up after his horse had fallen on him. He saw two mounted opponents and they called for Aldrydd to surrender. He remembered what the Earl had done to their prisoners and had no wish to lose his head to the bastard Steward. He remebered the Earl and his duty. The men in front of him were traitors to King Uther. These Silchester men didnot value loyalty but he would show them what a true knight of Lorges could do. He drew his blade and prepared to fight.

Sir John and Sir Aldrydd were both driven by their furious loyalty to attack the two mounted knights, who broke into a charge at them. The two sidestepped their foes' lances and then flung themselves at their opponents, who drew swords and struck back. Sir John shouted out in pain as he was kicked by a horse. He staggered back, and was struck by a sword in the shoulder, which cleft through chainmail and flesh alike. Blood streamed down his chainmail, and he barely managed to stay on his feet. Meanwhile, Sir Aldrydd parried his opponent's sword and then struck out with his shield, driving his opponent free from his saddle. Sir John continued to fend off his opponent's blow, as blood poured forth from his wound.

Sir Aldrydd saw Sir John's plight and roared furiously, striking a mighty blow against his foe that split his helmet in half and tumbled him to the ground. The knight of Levcomagus struggled to rise, and Sir Aldrydd's sword struck him in the hip, continuing to cleave through armour, flesh and bone until it flew in a gory shower from his shoulder, sending his bisected body tumbling to the blood-drenched grass. Sir John likewise managed to knock his opponent from his horse, and then gasped in agony as more blood flew from his body.

A third knight appeared, running an axe in his hand, and Sir Aldrydd moved to intercept him. The axeman's eyes blazed with fiery hatred as he swung powerful blows at the knight. The two charged at each other and Sir Aldrydd's sword felt flesh, but a blinding agony of light flashed into Sir Aldrydd's eyes and he knew no more.

Gasping for breath, Sir John finished off his foe and then turned to face the axeman, whose axe was embedded in Sir Aldrydd's head. The knight wrenched the axe free and then charged Sir John, howling a war cry. Sir John could see blood streaming from the axeman's hip; he struck with his sword and severed the knight's leg. Drenched in blood, he found himself the only man left standing upon the battlefield. Then his eyes rolled back in his head and he fell.

ooc: Sir Aldrydd is dead unless he gets First Aid by midnight (and it's currently evening). Sir John is unconscious. Sir Aldrydd has -1 Strength from his wound; Sir John has -1 Size.
The third knight was one of the two who was dismounted (the one who didn't suffer a critical failure). He successfully got Impassioned as well.

Gaius told Tinian he would split off to draw one of the two knights off and promptly did so. He rode off to the right and saw one of the knights pursue him. He smiled inwardly.
Now Saxonlover, I think St.Peter shall find your soul unworthy! he thought to himself and turned his horse around in a circle for a charge.

Sir Gaius and the Silchester knight tore through the forest, until Sir Gaius stopped his horse, leveled his spear and charged. The knight of Levcomagus readied his spear as well: but Sir Gaius' skill at jousting was too much for him. Sir Gaius's lance struck his foe upon the breast and drove clean through. Blood sprayed from the terrible wound and for a single second Sir Gaius lifted his opponent off his horse and held him aloft on his spear. Then the spear shattered, and the corpse hit the ground, where momentum made it spin and roll across the ground, until it hit a tree and was still.

Gaius looked at the impaled corpse and smiled inwardly. His duty to the Earl must have empowered him, so important was the message he carried. He said a prayer to God for thanks and before he began riding towards Salisbury and Sarum he collected the fallen knight's horse, so he could ride them at intervals not tireing them out too quickly.
He hoped the other knights were okay and he hoped Alain would make it safely to Sarum. He began riding off at a bit slower pace, but not too much so not to tire the horses.
He also whispered prayers of salvation for the others, whatever fate might await them or had happened. He had noticed that both Aldrydd & John had fallen behind and most likely off their horses as well, seeing as only two knights had followed Tinian and him.

Meanwhile, Alain continued to ride furiously. Two of the knights of Silchester were behind him still. He crouched low over Aurora, willing the horse to go faster, and she responded, her powerful muscles rippling. One of the knights was soon left behind, his horse exhausted; the other continued for some time, until they were well clear of the woods and in the Bourne River valley. However, he could not match Alain's speed, and he soon reined in his horse and began the return to Levcomagus.

Meanwhile Sir Tinian noticed that he was also alone, with but a single knight chasing him. The knights of Levcomagus made his blood boil! Filthy traitors to the Cymric people! He spun his horse and readied his spear. Behind him...

Tinian noticed he was alone with a start. Where had Gaius, Aldrydd and John got to, he wondered. He'd lost the pursuit as planned, but he'd also lost his companions and that wasn't part of the plan. Briefly he considered carrying on and returning home, but he found the thought distasteful and dishonorable. He also considered that Earl Roderick would want to know the whereabouts of his companions.

With a slight sigh of resignation he turned Bellerophon back the way he'd come, going slowly.
