Re: The Shimmering Host of Tor Nayel - holiday update
@ Elithmar: thanks
Got this year off to a good start I think, painted a small terrain piece in an afternoon...
and also finished off the Teclis conversion I posted a while back. Pretty pleased with how he turned out!

Re: Interesting GW numbers
Honestly, this seems like the only possible outcome after GW seemed to do everything in their power to make a mess of the AoS launch. If they'd communicated more with the players about what was coming, released something other than sigmarites early on, or put out some accessible summary background f...

Re: Question about magic schools in Ulthuan
The Dragon Mages are a good example of a group of magic users exclusive to one of the other kingdoms, one that seems to have more to do with instinct and natural talent than academic training (and possibly has something to do with the dragons themselves?). I like to think each kingdom would have its...

Re: New Dua... Dwarf Fyreslayers
They're among the more interesting models released for AoS so far, but... yikes, those are some really awkward poses. Feels to me like after the amount of cutting and greenstuffing it would take to make them look good they wouldn't be worth buying. Of course I've never liked GW dwarfs anyway so what...

Re: The Shimmering Host of Tor Nayel - Teclis Conversion
Hello Ulthuan! It's been ages since I posted anything here - I've had a hectic year (and a lot's happened in the hobby world too... ). Still, the holidays are here now and I've actually had time to spend on my High Elves! First I finished two bolt throwers that have been sitting around half-d...

You might find something suitable in the Glade Guard/Glade Rider kits. They have some good delicate, elfin looking heads, I've used them a few times for characters without helmets.

Re: Building of Lothern
The fluff for the Shield of the Merwyrm in the army book mentions that Lothern was besieged during the daemon invasion, which means it probably would have been built (in some form at least) before Aenarion became Phoenix King.

This is amazing, they've really nailed the look and feel of Warhammer. Even if the game itself is bad it looks like there'll be heaps of inspiration for conversions, paint schemes and the like!

Re: Warscrolls
Having glanced over the warscrolls for the two armies (Brets and HE) I own, I don't think this is too bad at all. On the whole it looks like GW have done a decent job of capturing the identity/playstyle of each unit, still don't see how anything can really work without some sort of points system, bu...

Re: 9th Edition rumours
These rules... I don't know. The idea of keeping it simple (and free) is a great initiative, but everything just looks so, so basic. I get that one of the barriers to learning Warhammer is its complexity, but that's part of the game's charm as well - this feels like a massive step too far in the oth...

That is hands down the best Alith Anar I have ever seen. There is nothing more awesome than seeing a totally unique conversion painted to such a high standard, just fantastic stuff.
Do you have any pics of him from the back? I'd be interested to see how you did the bow and quiver.

Re: 9th Edition rumours
Blech, those Sigmar dudes are so over the top I can't even take them seriously, especially the guys with the wings. On the other hand the Chaos stuff looks excellent and pretty coherent with the current aesthetic... I guess 1 out of 2 isn't too bad! Still, there's nothing that makes me want to write...

Re: 9th Edition rumours
If this rumour is true then it's at least an encouraging sign that the old background (and characters) aren't going to be ditched entirely. Karl Franz might be the only one named, but this talk of being "reborn" opens up the possibility of others coming back as well... better than somethin...

Re: Two wishes about griffons
It doesn't really bother me that griffons don't have barding, they don't really strike me as the sort of creature you'd put armour on. I find it much weirder that Pegasus Knights don't get it even though the models are clearly wearing barding! And if you want a mage on griffon, there's always the wi...

Re: The Shimmering Host of Tor Nayel - Elf Ranger
As soon as I saw the plastic Harlequin Shadowseer I knew it was too awesome not to do something with. Of course, I already had two foot mages (and with the IOB set I was about to order, that would be three) and I couldn't really justify another. Then it occured to me that the model would make a grea...

Re: From an aesthetic POV: Re-basing to round bases
I plan to keep putting everything on square. It looks better IMO, especially when it comes to things like base contact and ranks. My first GW game was LotR, and I never really liked how awkward it was trying to make a formation. Plus I have an irrational hatred of oval bases (they just look... wrong...

I've had that head with the massive plume kicking around in my bits box for about five years now, never used since it just looks too insanely huge - and then I see someone else use it like this and can't get over how regal and dynamic it looks... Re: Do you base paint carefully
I usually don't worry about making mistakes when I base coat, since I find that the areas I'd brush a mistake onto are the raised parts likely to get a bunch of highlights anyway. I also water my base coats down a little more than usual - that way they fill in the deeper areas better, and don't leav...

Re: Do You Name Your Units
I personally consider coming up with your own fluff and background one of the best parts of this hobby, I give all my characters backstories, roles and such, although I'm a bit more lax when it comes to units. When it comes to naming units I think there's plenty of options. You could title a unit by...

Re: Dan's Host of Athel Loren
That finished Swordmaster looks wonderful, especially the purple/orange contrast. An army in that colour scheme would look great!
Have you considered painting the detail on the shoulder/chest armour in a different colour? It might help break up the gold a little.
